    • An energy extraction device and method for extracting energy from a fluctuating energy flow from a renewable energy source. A hydraulic pump is driven by a rotating shaft, driven in turn by a renewable energy source. A hydraulic motor drives a load and a high pressure manifold communicates between the pump, motor and an elastically deformable fluid retaining body. The hydraulic pump and hydraulic motor comprise working chambers displacing a volume of working fluid selectable on each cycle of working chamber volume by the control of electronic valves. The pressure in the high pressure manifold is measured and the net rate of displacement of working fluid by the hydraulic pump is selected responsive thereto to regulate the torque applied to the said rotating shaft. The net rate of displacement of working fluid by the hydraulic motor is selected to smooth the energy flow to the load. The net rate of displacement of working fluid by the hydraulic motor is selected to regulate the pressure in the high pressure manifold to remain within an acceptable pressure range. Instead of tightly controlling the pressure in the high pressure manifold, it is allowed to vary and, by allowing the pressure to vary, a smooth output can be produced with high efficiency despite fluctuations in the energy flow from the renewable energy source. The pressure is more strongly controlled at the top and/or bottom of the acceptable pressure range than closer to an optimum working pressure.

    • An electronically controlled valve is suitable for regulating the flow of fluid between a fluid manifold and a working chamber of cyclically varying volume in a fluid-working machine having a rotating shaft. The valve includes a valve member moveable between a first position and a second position, wherein one of the first position and the second position is a position in which the valve is open and the other is a position in which the valve is closed. A valve member moving mechanism is operable to receive energy from a fluid-working machine crankshaft, or other rotating shaft, and to provide a valve member moving force to urge the valve member from the first position to the second position using the received energy. Thus, the energy used for movement of the valve against a pressure gradient is derived from the crankshaft. Energy received from the crankshaft can be stored and used subsequently to urge the valve member from the first position, allowing the valve to function despite timing differences between the availability of energy from the crankshaft and the requirement for energy to move the valve member.

    • A fluid working machine, operable to carry out a motoring cycle under at least some circumstances, comprises a controller (12) and a working chamber (2) of cyclically varying volume. The working chamber has a high pressure valve (18) associated therewith to control the connection of the working chamber to a high pressure manifold (20), and an electronically controllable primary low pressure valve (14) to control the connection of the working chamber to a low pressure manifold. The controller is operable to actively control at least the primary low pressure valve, in phased relationship to cycles of working chamber volume, to determine the net displacement of fluid by the working chamber on a cycle by cycle basis. The fluid working machine is adapted to release pressurised fluid from the working chamber prior to the opening of the primary low-pressure valve, during a motoring cycle. This facilitates the opening of the primary low pressure valve.
