      SOLUTION: The short pulse light generating device 2 is composed of a fiber laser 11, an acoustic and optical modulator 12, a polarized wave maintaining type optical fiber F1, an optical filter 15 or the like. The soliton pulse of each short pulse light outputted from the short pulse light generating device 2 is used as a reference short pulse, superimposed with a short pulse light to be measured on PBS32 and is made incident on an avalanche diode 33. Further, a signal outputted from the avalanche diode 33 is observed on an oscilloscope 34.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly measure the distance to an object, with high degree of accuracy.
      SOLUTION: After the pulsed light from an ultrashort pulse fiber laser 22 has been branched into the reference light A and the signal light by optical branch equipment 24, the signal light is irradiated on an object 10 via a scanning miller device 28 to receive its reflected light or scattered light; while the reference light A is altered the optical path length via an optical path length adjusting section 30. Then, by detecting the degree of interference between the reference light A, the optical path length is altered and the scattered light B by a differential detector 40 as the interference signal and by calculating the distance from the scanning mirror device 28 to the object 10, based on the adjusted value from the optical path length adjusting section 30 corresponding to the optical path length, at which the interference signal is maximized; and the distance to the position where the pulsed light from the object 10 is irradiated can be measured.

Light having a periodically varying wavelength is thereby outputted and used as broadband light.
