    • The invention relates to a method (and associated installation) for production of a gaseous atmosphere with controlled content of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, whereby: (a) a partial catalytic oxidation (22) of at least one hydrocarbon is carried out at a temperature below 1200 DEG C, a pressure of 3 to 20 bars, in the presence of oxygen or a gas comprising oxygen, to produce hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO), (b) a gaseous mixture is obtained comprising at least hydrogen (H2) and some carbon monoxide (CO), (c) the gaseous mixture obtained from step (b) is subjected to an instantaneous cooling by direct contact with water under pressure (24), to a temperature of between -20 DEG C and +80 DEG C to give a gaseous mixture at a pressure of 3 to 20 bars at step (b) and/or at step (c), characterized in that said catalytic oxidation reaction and the cooling step (c) are carried out in the same vessel (31), having a gas transport time between the two zones of catalytic reaction and cooling less than several tens of milliseconds preferably less than 50 ms.
