    • Method and apparatus for enhancing the clarity of diagnostic information in real-time B-mode and M-mode ultrasound displays including a beamformer (1) for acquiring ultrasound signals, a signal processor for processing the ultrasound signal with programmable dynamically variable non-linear filters (4, 7), and a display (9) for viewing the ultrasound signals. The non-linear filters (4, 7) may process video signals in range along each ultrasound scan line or azimuthally along multiple ultrasound scan lines of a two-dimensional B-mode image. The non-linear filters (4, 7) also can be two-dimensionally programmable for processing video signals both in range along each ultrasound scan line and azimuthally along multiple ultrasound scan lines over regions of a two-dimensional B-mode image. The non-linear filter (4, 7) may be responsive to a local signal measurement and to spatial positions in a B-mode image for control of filter parameters. The non-linear filter (4, 7) can also be programmable to accomodate variable system characteristics for particular imaging applications.

    • An ultrasonic receive beamformer (10) includes transducers (11) forming receive signals that are applied to sub-array processors (12). Each sub-array processor includes at least one analog preconditioning circuit (13), phase shifter (14) and a summer (16), and each phase shifter is responsive to at least one of the transducer signals to shift the transducer signal by a respective phase angle and to apply the phase shifted transducer signals to the summer. Each of the summers supplies a summed sub-array signal via an analog-to-digital converter (18) to a respective beamformer processor (20). The phase angles for any one of the sub-array processors form a sum substantially equal to zero. Furthermore, the phase angles for any one of the sub-array processors are independent of the time delay of the respective digital beam former processor. The time resolution of the time delay of the digital beamformer processors is substantially as fine as the time resolution of the phase angles of the phase shifters. The phase angles of the phase shifters are updated at a slower rate than the focusing update rate of the beamformer processors.

    • Method for scanning a field of view using a scan format, wherein the carrier frequency of the imaging pulse is higher in the center of the field of view than at the edges. The frequency variation can be accomplished on transmit by modulating appropriately delayed programmable initial waveform information samples with a programmable carrier frequency (T-102). This results in a pulse transmitted into the body whose frequency is highest in the center portion of the scan, and is reduced in a controlled fashion as the steering angle is increased in order to mitigate grating lobe artifacts. The technique preserves signal energy because modulation merely translates the signal in frequency substantially without modification of the pulse shape itself. The technique is also useful on receive, wherein demodulation to or near baseband followed by post-beamformation predetection remodulation (R-100) can correct for systematic scan-line-to-scan-line phase variations to ensure scan-line-to-scan-line phase coherency for subsequent coherent processing across scan lines or for coherent image formation (R-26) using the phase and amplitude information from multiple beams.

    • This invention is an apparatus for imaging an object using a transducer array (1) for transmitting one or more beams (2a, 2b) that are steered and/or translated to transmit scan lines for multiple excitation events, so as to scan a field of view of the object for sensing received signals reflected from the object after each excitation event on one or more receive beams on receive scan lines, and for transducing those sensed received signals into corresponding electrical signals. The method and apparatus is additionally for acquiring and storing coherent samples retaining both phase and amplitude information of those electrical signals obtained on the receive scan lines throughout at least a portion of the field of view, and for combining stored coherent samples associated with distinct receive beams to synthesize new coherent image samples aligned on synthetic scan lines, which are distinct from any one of (a) receive scan lines on which a signal was sensed, (b) transmit scan lines on which a signal was directed, or (c) transmit scan lines and receive scan lines. The method and apparatus is further for detecting the synthesized coherent image samples, and displaying or recording the resulting image field.
