    • A sensor device for measuring electrochemical, chemical, or biological oxygen demand in a sample is disclosed. The device includes a measurement chamber (14) having at least one chamber dimension of less than 1 millimeter. Also included in the device are working (56) and counter (60) electrodes, and possibly a reference electrode (58) adapted for electrical contact with liquid contained in the chamber. Measurement is accomplished under conditions of electron transfer to or from the components or intermediary to or from the working electrode (56), an electrical circuit connecting this electrode to the counter electrode (60) and possibly the reference electrode (58) and having a power source for applying a voltage potential between the working and counter electrodes, and possibly the working and reference electrodes. A current-responsive means is included in the circuit for measuring the instantaneous or time-averaged electrical current or for integrating the charge flowing through the circuit over a defined period of time, the current or charge being related to the total oxidizable or reducible bio/organic components contained in the sample with the measurement chamber.

    • Systems and methods of detecting occlusions and fluid-loss conditions (e.g., disconnects and/or leakages) in an infusion pump are discussed. For example, electrokinetic infusion pumps may develop an occlusion in the fluid flow path, which can disrupt control of fluid dispersed from the pump. As well, an infusion set disconnect can also result in a fluid-loss that can be disruptive. Such disruptions can be troublesome to systems that control the infusion pump, such as closed loop controllers. Accordingly, systems and methods described herein can be used to detect such occlusions and fluid-loss conditions during infusion pump operation. For example, a position sensor can be used to monitor fluid flow from the infusion pump, with the measurement being compared with an expected value to detect an occlusion or fluid-loss condition. Other algorithms for utilizing the position sensor are also described.

    • The invention provides related apparatus and methods of making an integrated electrospray tip (102) by depositing ionic and/or electronic conductor materials onto a planar substrate. The invention also features methods of forming an electrospray apparatus comprising coupling a first planar substrate (104) to the surface of a second planar substrate (105), wherein a surface on at least one of the substrates includes one or more microfluidic channels (109, 112) and/or reservoirs ((108, 113, 114) which are at least partially or totally enclosed therebetween. The conductive regions of the apparatus do not intersect the microfluidic channels (109, 112) within other portions of the apparatus provided preferably. The invention further provides related apparatus and methods for manufacturing and using microfluidic devices (101) with integrated electrodes for electrospray ionization. The electrospray apparatus in some embodiments may include an electronic conductor electrode or an ionic conductor electrode formed from a microfluidic channel (109, 112) containing a conductive material selected from a variety of solutions and gels.
