    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering system provided with a locking device capable of surely being locked by a simple constitution.
      SOLUTION: The locking device 10 comprises: a first member 3 having a first rack tooth 6 and fixed to a fixing bracket 2; a second member 4 having a second rack tooth 7 engaged with the first rack tooth 6 on one side, detachably attached to the first member 3 and being in a fixed state with a column 1 in the tilting direction; and an action member 5 for pressing the second member 4 to the first member 3 side and engaging the first rack tooth 6 with the second rack tooth 7. The action member 5 comprises a pressing face 8 contacting with a pressed face 9 formed on the other side of the second member 4. These pressed face 9 and the pressing face 8 are inclined faces which displace the second member 4 with respect to the action member 5 with both the faces 8, 9 sliding with each other by pressing the pressed face 9 of the pressing face 8.

      SOLUTION: An upper bracket 4 for mounting a column 2 on a vehicle body 6 has a prescribed fastening margin on an outer periphery of the column 2 and has a column support part 4a pressed in a shaft direction. In other words, the column 2 has a relatively pressed-in relation with a bracket 4 and is normally in pressure contact with the column support part 4a, and thereby the column 2 is moved, while generating strong friction between the column and the column support part 4a, when impact force to press the column 2 in the shaft direction is imparted due to a secondary collision. By this friction, energy of the secondary collision is reduced.
