    • A vacuum blanket (20) for holding a sensitive sheet of material (24) in precise registration with a film master (22) against a rigid transparent plate (26) includes a blanket (30) of thin, flexible material having at least one vacuum port (40) therein and an inside face opposing the rigid plate and adapted for biasing the sensitive sheet and film master toward the rigid plate in precise registration with one another. A flexible perimeter seal (34) is provided around the edges of the blanket for sealing off a vacuum chamber (32) established between the blanket and the plate when air is withdrawn through the vacuum port. A bladder (52) of thin, flexible sheet material is secured to the outer surface of the blanket with a plurality of spaced apart seams (56) forming a plurality of separate, inflatable air chambers (60) on the outside surface of the blanket. An inflation port (70) is provided in the bladder for directing air under pressure to inflate the air chambers and thereby create a plurality of induced bleed passages (80) formed along the plurality of seams by a slight amount of movement of the blanket, sensitive sheet and film master away from the rigid plate. The bleed passages aid in rapidly evacuating the entire surface area of the vacuum chamber when air is initially withdrawn through the vacuum port and the bleed passages are then diminished when pressurized air is exhausted so that the sheets are pressed flat and held tightly in registration against the glass plate during an exposure cycle.

    • An overhead light exposure unit (30) for making copies on pre-sensitized sheets from images on film includes a base (32) supporting a vacuum blanket (14) for pressing the sheets and film together against a transparent panel (40). The transparent panel is mounted in a frame (38) that is pivotally secured (42) to the base for movement between a closed hori­zontal position for making copies and an upwardly tilted, open position for unloading and loading film, sheets and media into place. A light source (60) is positioned above the panel for directing controlled, high intensity light downwardly through the panel to reproduce film images on the presensitized sheets held in place by the vacuum blanket. A support system (70, 72) is provided for holding the light source in an exposure position spaced directly above the trans­parent panel for directing controlled intensity light downwardly through the panel to reproduce an image on a silk screen, sheet or film held in place by the vacuum blanket. The support system is operative to move the light source away from the exposure position to an open position to afford better access to and viewing of the working space above the horizontal position of the vacuum blanket for loading and unload­ing film media, etc., when the frame is in an open position. The light source is maintained within a space above the base defined within an upwardly extend­ing periphery thereof even in the open position and the exposure distance between the light source and the film sheets is minimized when the light source is in the exposure position to reduce the exposure time interval required.
