    • In a printer which prints on a roll paper transported toward a discharge port and cuts the roll paper, an exchangeable lower cover is attached to the printer. The exchangeable lower cover defines a lower edge of the discharge port. A change of height of the discharge port is allowed by exchanging the exchangeable lower cover for another one. Hereby, it is possible to change specifications between one for holding a printed slip and the other for allowing the printed slip to fall freely. In the former specification, a brush provided at a periphery of an upper edge of the discharge port is in contact with a lower cover. On the other hand, in the latter specification, the brush is in distant from another lower cover.

    • In order to cope with a change in design between a printer having a hip down design specification (first specification) and another printer having a hip up design specification (second specification), each of a lower frame and an upper frame has a structure common to both of the specifications. The lower frame and the upper frame are coupled to each other by a hinge structure removably attached to the lower frame and the upper frame. The hinge structure is selected from a first hinge structure and a second hinge structure. By changing the hinge structure from the first hinge structure to the second hinge structure and vice versa, the height of a hinge center can easily be changed.

    • A method and an apparatus for generating vacuum pressure in an engine is disclosed. The engine includes an intake path, combustion chambers and an exhaust path. Airflow in the intake path is controlled by a throttle valve. An exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) passage deflects a part of flow of the exhaust gas to the intake path from the exhaust path. An EGR valve regulates the flow of exhaust gas passing through the EGR passage. A brake booster is connected to the intake path and increases braking force of the vehicle. A pressure sensor detects the pressure in the booster. A central processing unit determines whether the detected pressure is higher than a predetermined value. The throttle valve is in a relatively open position when the engine performs stratified charge combustion. The throttle valve decreases the pressure in the intake path when the throttle valve restricts flow. The CPU controls the throttle valve to decrease the pressure in the intake path when the booster pressure is higher than the predetermined value and actuates the EGR valve to decrease the gas flow in the EGR passage. This results in better brake and engine performance.

    • In a printer including a base frame, an upper frame rotatably coupled to the base frame, and a platen and a platen pulley both rotatably supported by the upper frame, a subframe is attached to the upper frame rotatably and movably in one direction. A reduction gear and a belt pulley both are rotatably supported by the subframe. A drive gear is rotatably supported by the base frame and engaged with the reduction gear. A drive belt is stretched between the platen pulley and the belt pulley. A spring is attached between the upper frame and the subframe. The base frame has a guiding portion concentric with the drive gear. The subframe has a guided portion opposite the guiding portion. The spring applies tension to the drive belt and brings the guided portion into contact with the guiding portion.

    • A linear motion guide unit in which rolling applicators transfer lubricant from a lubricant-containing member to raceway grooves on a track rail to make less sliding-friction resistance to a sliding element. The guide unit has a case accommodating therein the lubricant-containing member, and rolling applicators supported for rotation by a bearing member in the case. The lubricant held in the lubricant-containing member is applied onto the raceway grooves on the track rail through the rolling applicators, the peripheries of which are kept on sliding contact with the lubricant-containing member, thereby lubricating the confronting raceway grooves of the track rail and the sliding element, along which rolling elements run through in the sliding element. The frictional resistance that is encountered when the rolling element run through the track rail is the frictional resistance to rolling motion, which makes less the sliding resistance to the sliding element.
