    • A valve train for an internal combustion engine includes a mounting member mounted on a cylinder head, and a pair of elongated rocker arms interposed between a camshaft and the mounting member. Each rocker arm has opposite first and second sides facing a camshaft and the mounting member, respectively. The rocker arm has opposite ends held respectively against the camshaft and a respective one of intake and exhaust valves at the first side of the rocker arm. A pair of hydraulic tappets are mounted on the mounting member. Each hydraulic tappet includes an axially-extensible elongated body, and a tubular boot of an elastic material mounted around the body to form an oil reservoir therebetween. Each hydraulic tappet has one end held against the second side of a respective one of the rocker arms intermediate the opposite ends of the rocker arm, and the other end of the hydraulic tappet is held by the mounting the against movement away from the rocker arm, whereby upon rotation of the camshaft, each rocker arm is pivotally moved about the one end of the hydraulic tappet for moving a respective one of the intake and exhaust valves.

    • An exhaust gas cleaning device of an internal combustion engine, comprising a secondary-air supply system connected to exhaust ports to supply the secondary air for cooling the exhaust gas, and reed valve devices installed in the secondary-air supply system and adapted to be opened and closed by the pulsating pressure generated in the exhaust ports when the engine is in operation. The reed valve devices are mounted on the side surface of the cylinder block, each of which has a reed valve chamber and a reed valve that divides the reed valve chamber into an upstream chamber and a downstream chamber and that is adapted to be opened and closed by the pulsating exhaust gas. The upstream chamber is communicated with the open air via a secondary-air intake pipe, and the downstream chamber is connected to the exhaust port via a secondary-air supply passage. The exhaust gas cleaning device is simply constructed so that its maintenance is easy and the presence of the device does not hinder maintenance operation for the internal combustion engine such as replacement of spark plugs, adjustment of tappets, and the like.

    • An internal combustion engine includes an engine body having a chamber and an endless transmission member extended around and operatively engaged with a crankshaft and a cam shaft to transmit a rotation of the crankshaft to the cam shaft, the endless transmission member being movable along a closed path of travel in the chamber. A hollow mounting member is disposed in the chamber and has an upper open end and a lower tubular portion. The mounting member is fixed to the engine body through fastening elements secured to an upper portion of a peripheral wall of the mounting member. A tensioner device is disposed in the chamber and includes a tensioner member movably mounted on the engine body, and a hydraulic lock mechanism including a hollow cylinder and a plunger slidably received in the cylinder to define a hydraulic chamber in the cylinder. The cylinder is received in the hollow mounting member and snugly fitted in the lower tubular portion of the mounting member against movement. The mounting member and the cylinder defines an oil reservoir for holding oil therein, the hydraulic lock mechanism having passage through which the oil reservoir is in fluid communication with the hydraulic chamber. A check valve is connected to the passage for blocking it to prevent the plunger from moving in one direction along the cylinder. The plunger is movable in the other direction and operatively engaged with the tensioner member to hold it in sliding contact with the cam chain.

    • An exhaust gas cleaning system for an internal combustion engine is provided which has an exhaust system including a TWC catalyst. The exhaust gas cleaning system comprises a secondary air supply passage coupled to the exhaust system on the upstream side of the ternary catalyst for supplying secondary air to the exhaust system. A secondary air control valve is positioned in the secondary air supply passage for regulating the flow of secondary air therethrough. The secondary air control valve comprises a unitary valve casing, a valve passage in the valve casing coupled to the secondary air supply passage, and first and second control valves for separately opening and closing the valve passages. The first control valve is closed when the engine is decelerating and the second control valve is closed when the engine is accelerating or operating at high speed, thereby maintaining the TWC catalyst as a reducing atmosphere.
