The road wheels of a vehicle are driven by rotary motors 24a, Fig. 1, supplied with liquid under pressure by a pump 2a driven by prime mover 1a, the quantity and direction of the liquid being controlled by a valve A 1 actuated by a piston 9a which is controlled by valve C operated manually by lever 13a. Movement of the piston 78 of valve C causes movement of piston 9a which moves a cylinder 71 around piston 78 to shut off flow through the valve. The piston 9a also actuates a by-pass valve 53a in the conduits 3a, 4a between the pump and valve A 1 . In another arrangement, a single rotary motor drives the drum of a winch. In yet another arrangement, motors 5f, Fig.. 8, drive the endless tracks of a vehicle and are supplied under the control of pedal 26c in similar manner to the motors of Fig. 1. The motor swash plates 5d are adjustable differentially, for steering, by pistons 13c each controlled by a valve C 1 similar to valve C, the two valves C 1 being actuated by lever 16c pivoted at 17c and turnable by handle 18c. In a modification, valve A 1 in the conduits 3a, 4a controls two pistons acting at opposite ends of a ship's rudder bar. In another modification, a rod 36b, Fig. 5, is manually moved axially to turn quadrant 27b about pivot 28c, thus turning planet 25b to actuate the piston of valve C controlling pistons 19b. This piston operates by-pass valve 44b in conduits 40b, 41b and valve A 1 , which controls pistons 7b, 8b to turn rudder 11b, The rudder moves rod 31b axially to turn quadrant 29b about pivot 30b and restore the piston of valve C and hence the piston 19b to their central positions. Valve A 1 is thus closed to stop movement of the rudder. Rods 31b, 36b are interconnected by a piston and cylinder 35b allowing lost-motion.

    • An outboard motor includes a bracket assembly that has a swivel bracket carrying a drive unit for pivotal movement about a steering axis that extends generally vertically. The swivel bracket has a tubular section that extends generally vertically. The drive unit has a steering member that includes a steering shaft section extending through the tubular section and defining the steering axis. The steering shaft section has top and bottom portions out of the tubular section. The steering shaft section further has an upper portion below the top portion within the tubular section, and a lower portion above the bottom portion within the tubular section. The tubular section has upper, lower and middle bushings. The upper and lower bushings pivotally support the upper and lower portions, respectively. The middle bushing pivotally supports a middle portion of the steering shaft section between the upper and lower portions.
