    • The present invention provides a network apparatus in a multi-rate shared medium network and controlling method therefore. The apparatus accesses the shared medium using a contention based shared medium access protocol, wherein said apparatus is able to use a plurality of physical layer rates over the shared access medium. One of the plurality of physical layer rates is set as the rated physical layer rate of the apparatus corresponding to a rated application layer bandwidth. The method comprises the steps of determining the real physical layer rate of the apparatus; and upon detection of the real physical layer rate being lower than the rated physical layer rate, adjusting the real application layer bandwidth of the apparatus to be lower than the rated application layer bandwidth. According to the invention, the shared medium is controlled and managed as a communication resource to prevent one or some faulty CPEs from negatively influencing the application layer bandwidth of normal ones so that the normal CPEs and the network on the whole can work properly under such a condition.

    • An Asymmetric Data over Coaxial (ADoC) dual mode device provides support for both wired and wireless modes of operation, and can switch between these two modes periodically. In ADoC (wired) mode, the dual mode device operates as ADoC Station while in WLAN (wireless) mode, it operates as WLAN Access Point. In one particular implementation, a communication unit (3100, 3104, 3106) is configured for communicating over multiple media including a wireless medium and a wired medium, the communication unit being operable (1) in a wireless mode for communicating over a wireless medium using a wireless protocol, and (2) in a wired mode for communicating over the wired medium using a variation of the wireless protocol. A Media Access Control (MAC) layer uses a polling mechanism basic access method for the wired mode. A switch (3104) allows switching the communication unit between the wireless mode and the wired mode.

    • The present invention relates to a medium access control method for data communication through CATV access network over coaxial cable, wherein the method comprises transmitting downstream data frames from a central device to network terminals in downstream time slots of super frames and receiving upstream data frames from said network terminals to said central device in upstream time slots of the super frames over a same carrier frequency, said super frame being divided into multiple time slots comprising at least one downstream time slot intended for transmitting data frames, and one or more upstream time slots which are assigned respectively by said central device to said network terminals for transmitting upstream data frames, each one upstream time slot being allocable to one network terminal. Advantageously, the data is transmitted through a CATV access network over coaxial cable by using this access control method with guaranteed QoS.
