    • An Asymmetric Data over Coaxial (ADoC) dual mode device provides support for both wired and wireless modes of operation, and can switch between these two modes periodically. In ADoC (wired) mode, the dual mode device operates as ADoC Station while in WLAN (wireless) mode, it operates as WLAN Access Point. In one particular implementation, a communication unit (3100, 3104, 3106) is configured for communicating over multiple media including a wireless medium and a wired medium, the communication unit being operable (1) in a wireless mode for communicating over a wireless medium using a wireless protocol, and (2) in a wired mode for communicating over the wired medium using a variation of the wireless protocol. A Media Access Control (MAC) layer uses a polling mechanism basic access method for the wired mode. A switch (3104) allows switching the communication unit between the wireless mode and the wired mode.

    • The present invention provides a network apparatus in a multi-rate shared medium network and controlling method therefore. The apparatus accesses the shared medium using a contention based shared medium access protocol, wherein said apparatus is able to use a plurality of physical layer rates over the shared access medium. One of the plurality of physical layer rates is set as the rated physical layer rate of the apparatus corresponding to a rated application layer bandwidth. The method comprises the steps of determining the real physical layer rate of the apparatus; and upon detection of the real physical layer rate being lower than the rated physical layer rate, adjusting the real application layer bandwidth of the apparatus to be lower than the rated application layer bandwidth. According to the invention, the shared medium is controlled and managed as a communication resource to prevent one or some faulty CPEs from negatively influencing the application layer bandwidth of normal ones so that the normal CPEs and the network on the whole can work properly under such a condition.

    • The invention provides a method for a web browser based remote administration system to maintain its security by utilizing an ActiveX control or a plug-in, without relying on HTTPS protection to transact management information. The invention does not burden the embedded system and thus is ideally suited for the remote administration of embedded systems. The invention provides a method to calculate a security code base upon identical algorithms in the administrative system having the browser and the embedded system. When the browser-based administrator submits the management information, an operator packages the control information as a string and invokes the security function in the plug-in with the string as a parameter. After the security function returns the result, the operator sends the form data together with a coded digest to the remote system. The digest may be embedded in the form data, for example, as a hidden field.
