摘要： An optical interface device is provided for use in an undersea optical transmission system that includes an undersea optical transmission path, a plurality of optical repeaters located along the optical transmission path, and a selected one of any of a plurality of different vendor supplied optical transmission terminals each of which has a vendor-specific interface. The optical interface device includes a signal processing unit providing signal conditioning to optical signals received from the vendor-specific interface of the selected optical transmission terminal so that the optical signals are suitable for transmission through the undersea optical transmission path. A gain monitoring arrangement is also provided for determining a change in gain provided by any one of the optical repeaters. The optical interface device also includes a processor for identifying a particular pump source that has failed from among a plurality of pump sources used to supply pump energy to the repeater based on the change in gain determined by the gain monitoring arrangement.

摘要： An optical amplifier arrangement is provided for an undersea optical transmission system. The arrangement includes first and second modules. Each of the modules includes an internal housing having an outer dimension substantially equal to an outer dimension of an internal fiber splice housing of an undersea optical fiber cable joint. The internal housing includes a pair of opposing end faces each having a retaining element for retaining the internal housing within an outer housing of the undersea optical fiber cable joint. The internal housing also includes a sidewall interconnecting the opposing end faces, which extends between the opposing end faces in a longitudinal direction. The sidewall includes a receptacle portion having a plurality of thru-holes each being sized to receive a passive optical component employed in an optical amplifier. The module also includes at least one circuit board on which resides at least one voltage dropping element for conveying voltage from the conductor to electronics also residing on the circuit board and associated with the optical amplifier. An isolated electrical path provides electrical power received from a conductor in at least one optical fiber cable to the at least one circuit board. The voltage dropping element is in thermal communication with the sidewall. A bend limiter couples the first module to the second module.

摘要： In accordance with the present invention, a land-based cable station (100) is provided for an undersea optical transmission system. The cable station (100) includes submarine line terminal equipment (SL TE) for processing terrestrial traffic received from an external source, power feed equipment (106) for supplying electrical power to active undersea components of the transmission system, an element management system (108) for configuring and obtaining status information from the transmission system, and a cable termination box (110) in which an undersea cable terminates. The SLTE includes terrestrial optical transmission equipment (102) receiving the terrestrial traffic and generating optical signals in response thereto. The SLTE also includes an interface device (104) providing signal conditioning to the optical signals received from the terrestrial optical transmission equipment so that the optical signals are suitable for transmission through the undersea optical transmission system.

For example, one exemplary embodiment of the present invention employs an optical repeater that can accept any existing submarine cable, in combination with an optical line interface terminal that can accept existing terrestrial terminal equipment. Regarding market division, this embodiment is specifically limited to spans of less than 5000 kilometers, and preferably between 350 and 4000 kilometers, thereby straddling both the long-haul and short-haul markets while providing highly desirable services and capability. By selecting this market segment, the embodiment achieves highly desirable economics without the usual concomitant high engineering costs.

摘要： An undersea optical repeater is provided. The repeater includes a pressure vessel for use in an undersea environment. The pressure vessel includes a pressure housing and at least two cable receiving elements disposed on opposing ends of the pressure housing for respectively receiving ends of optical cables that each include an electrical conductor therein. The cable receiving elements are adapted to be in electrical contact with the respective electrical conductors in the optical cables. At least one optical amplifier is located in the pressure vessel. The optical amplifier includes at least one electrical component adapted to receive electrical power from the electrical conductors in the optical cables. The pressure housing includes a dielectric layer having sufficient dielectric properties for electrically isolating the cable receiving elements from one another to provide a voltage thereacross.
