The ballast for an electric discharge lamp a comprises an autotransformer having an open circuit output voltage approximately equal to the supply voltage and two series connected and closely coupled primary windings W1, W2 with a loosely coupled secondary winding W3 connected between a lamp electrode and the junction between the two primary windings so that when the lamp is in operation ballasting is effected by the loosely coupled and series connected windings W1 and W3. In the case when the usual starting switch in shunt with the discharge path, Fig. 4 (not shown), is dispensed with a further loosely coupled secondary winding W4 may be extended from the secondary primary winding W2, each secondary being provided with a tapping to provide heating current to the lamp electrodes. The transformer, Fig. 6 (not shown), preferably has a shell type core, with the two primary windings concentrically arranged at one end of the centre limb and the secondary windings similarly arranged at the other end. A single tapped primary winding may be used.

    • 649,816. Transformers. EKCO-ENSIGN ELECTRIC, Ltd., and STICKLEY, W. A. Dec. 30, 1948, No. 33467. [Class 38 (ii)] A leaky transformer comprises a plurality of windings spaced apart on a core between which windings, or some of them, is inserted a magnetic shunt between the core and an external yoke, the magnetic shunt being a continuous length of insulated magnetic strip material of such structure .as would be provided by winding an even strip of material upon itself into a roll and then subjecting this to pressure between two parallel plates situated tangentially at diametrically opposite sides of the curved periphery. A transformer suitable for use in a twin discharge lamp circuit has main core laminations A which support wind. ings B, C, D. Magnetic shunts M1, M2, M3, M4 are interposed between the windings, being separated from the core and its external yoke, and from the windings, by suitable packing material E. The shunts comprise continuous lengths of insulated magnetic strip material which may be wound in the form of a circular strip material which may be wound in the form of a circular coil and flattened to the shape shown, or may be wound initially in that shape. The winding C may serve as a primary winding, and windings B, D as secondary windings for two discharge lamps (Fig. 4, not shown). Each lamp is provided with a starting switch, preferably of the glow-discharge type. A capacitor provides the desired outof-phase relationship between the currents passing through the lamps when in operation. The windings act as stabilizing chokes after the lamps have struck.

    • 644,274. Inductances; supply systems for space-discharge lamps. EKCO-ENSIGN ELECTRIC, Ltd., and STICKLEY, W. A. Sept. 28, 1948, No. 25214. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] In a circuit arrangement for two parallel connected discharge lamps each started by a glow discharge starting switch and supplied through ballast impedances comprising respectively a choke coil and a condenser in series with a further choke coil to reduce flicker, the two choke coils are loosely coupled so that when the first lamp has started its associated choke coil induces an E.M.F. in that choke coil in series with the condenser so as to increase the voltage across the second lamp until it has started. and thereby ensure operation of the second glow discharge switch. Preferably each choke coil is wound on a laminated E-shaped core with the open ends facing and separated by two similar plates of mild steel or other magnetic material interleaved with spacers of non-magnetic material such as impregnated paper, the two cores, plates and spacers being held together as one assembly by brackets or strips bolted together through the cores.
