Class 39(1) [Also in Group XXXV] An electric discharge lamp of the type comprising a tube with two electrodes, located entirely near each end of the tube, and wherein each electrode throughout the useful life of the lamp consists only of a single electrically heated filament incorporating electron-emissive material and which maintains substantially constant emissivity, is characterized by the lamp terminals at each end of the lamp being directly connected to closely situated tappings on the respective filament, whereby in operation only a relatively small portion of each filament is adapted to pass pre-heating current. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a 40 watt lamp 1, two feet long, has filamentary electrodes A1 and A2, a relatively small portion B1 of the filament A1 for example one quarter, being connected across a secondary winding T1 of an autotransformer T whilst a similar small portion B2 of the filament A2 is connected across a further secondary winding T2 of the transformer. The transformer T is in circuit with a ballast C across the 200 volt A.C. mains M. The windings and tappings are such as to give in the starting condition, before striking, voltage drops; across C-53, across T1-3.5, across T2-3.5, and across the centre section of T-140. In operation current flowing through BI and B2 causes hot spots to be formed in the electrodes and an arc starts from these spots. The construction of the ballast C and transformer T is given in the Specification. Specification 338,494, [Class 39(1)], is referred to.

The contact may be secured to or integral with the spring and the holder may be of the type described in Specification 595,951.

In modifications, the intermediate section C2 is split into two and the supply A.C. applied to the division, and the winding sections C1, C3 may be extended beyond their junction with C2 to increase the voltage across the lamps. A suitable transformer design is given in the Specification.

In a holder 1 for a tubular electric lamp, spring blade contacts 4 are moved by the insertion of projecting lamp contact pins into engagement with the binding posts 10 of the holder. The contacts 4 are provided with pinholding recesses 13 and are positioned in the branches 3 of the holder entrance aperture which terminates in a slot 2 extending to the edge of the holder. A cover-plate 15 is riveted on to the holder body. In use, the lamp pins are entered in the slot 2 and the lamp is rotated until each pin is engaged in a contact recess 13, the contacts 4 being then pressed against the posts 10. Specification 595,951 is referred to.

[Class 38 (iv)] To ensure adequate preheating and simultaneous starting of a pair of fluorescent discharge lamps A, B having filamentary electrodes, the ballast, e.g. a choke C, a heater of one lamp, a starting switch S, the primary winding P of a heating transformer T having leakage reactance, a heater of the other lamp, are all in series across the supply X, the transformer having two similar secondary windings W 1 , W2 connected respectively to the other two lamp heaters with a single connection between the two latter. The transformer is preferably of the shell type with the windings on the central limb, the primary being disposed between and separated from the secondary windings by magnetic shunts, Fig. 2 (not shown). The voltage across each secondary winding is preferably made approximately twice that across the primary winding.

The transformer is preferably mounted midway between the lamp ends so that leads of equal length may connect the transformer secondaries to the filamentary electrodes to ensure equal heating and thereby prevent rectification. The metal casing is preferably " earthed."
