    • The aim is to improve a position sensor with a housing, a sliding block guided in a guide in the housing and at least one measurement probe mounted on the sliding block for transmitting a measurement signal which depends on the position of the sliding block, in such a way as to ensure that the position sensor with the simplest possible construction will function in a trouble-free and reliable way over a long operating life.     • Proposed is a transport system comprising a branched rail network on which autonomous workpiece carriers in the form of trolleys can move. The system exhibits a high degree of safety in non-regulation operational situations. Several independent devices are used for this purpose, but designed to function particularly well together. One embodiment includes a signal-processing logic circuit based on a microprocesser (10), the logic circuit monitoring for plausibility the flow of trolley movement data and external signals and halting the trolley if necessary. In a second embodiment, the tilting front end (13) of the trolley is designed as a two-stage buffer, the first buffer state (34) being produced by a light impact, the second (35) by a hard (non-regulation) impact. Another embodiment calls for the trolley to be fitted with a shock sensor (24) responsive to a hard (non-regulation) impact. Another embodiment calls for an energy-consumption monitoring device (40) which determines the amount of energy taken from the batteries during a particular time interval T and compares it with a pre-determined threshold value (46), halting the trolley if the threshold value (46) is exceeded for too long a period of time.

    • Proposed is a transport system with self-powered workpiece carriers in the form of trolleys and with a branched rail network, the system enabling workpiece-transfer times to be reduced to the minimum. This is done by collecting trolley movement data and external signals using sensors (30, 52, 53) and switching means (50, 54). A microprocessor (10) is linked to the trolley drive unit (12) and brake system, and accelerates and decelerates the trolley, powering it to give the shortest possible workpiece-transfer time. In order to achieve the highest possible rates of acceleration and deceleration, the microprocessor (10) determines, from the speed pick-up characteristics of the trolley, the instantaneous mass of the trolley. By modifying the response threshold (27) of the trolley-separation sensor (30) to the prevailing situation, it is possible to maintain a high trolley frequency. Timely processing of the signals (31) from the trolley-separation sensor (30) by the microprocessor (10) enables several trolleys travelling one behind the other to be accelerated almost simultaneously. From the sequencing logic of the trolley-movement and control signals fed to the microprocessor (10), the microprocessor determines the position of a trolley in a line of trolleys waiting to approach a stopping point.
