    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize a reactor, to prolong its service life and to improve the reactive efficiency to yield a desired product by providing a heat conductive wall having wall thickness and/or a wall material changing its thickness along the flow direction of a medium in the reactor for carrying out non-adiabatic reaction. SOLUTION: As the reactor for carrying out a process under non-adiabatic conditions, a heat exchanger and a reactor where heat generating reaction or heat consuming reaction is carried out are exemplified. For example, a hydrocarbon supply material is steam-reformed to produce the gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide by the reaction shown in formulae I, II. Since the maximums of the temperature of the tube wall of the reactor and of the flow rate of heat appear at the different axial positions, the reactor is constituted so that the wall thickness is changed along the axial direction of the wall. Namely, the wall thickness at the position of the highest temperature is made thickest and that at the position of the largest flow rate of heat is made thinnest. As a result, the flow rate of heat of the reactor is increased and its durability is improved.
