    • This invention relates to a method of, and apparatus for, separating contaminates from a base liquid and whereby the contaminated base liquid is passed through a pretreatment vessel before being passed to a conventional separator. In one described embodiment, the pretreatment vessel (11) is of generally cylindrical form arranged with its axis substantially vertical, base liquid to be de-contaminated is supplied into the mid-height regions of the vessel through a tangential device (16) to cause circulating flows within the vessel (11), and the vessel (11) includes an outlet (13a) in its top regions (13) for the release of light contaminates, an outlet (12a) in its lower regions for the release of heavy contaminates, and an outlet duct (30) in its mid-region, spaced from the inlet for releasing partially contaminated liquid from the vessel (11), for release into a conventional separator (26). Preferably the method includes the steps of introducing a first treatment material to the base liquid before, or as, the base liquid enters the vessel (11) and adding a second treatment material into the partially decontaminated base liquid to be directed to the conventional separator (26).

    • The invention relates to a separator, for separating contaminates from a base liquid, and essentially includes a roof arrangement by which at least part of the roof arrangement depends into the liquid in the separator. In one embodiment the roof arrangement (14) is of generally inverted conical form, the decontaminated liquid flows from the separator through a flow modifying member (25), which dampens any circulating flows in the liquid, and upwardly out of the separator to a reservoir defined by the inverted conical roof arrangement (14). The arrangement also includes means (30a) for releasing gases from the volumes beneath the roof arrangement (14), thereby to maintain the whole of the roof arrangement (14) in contact with the liquid to assist a reducing circulating flow in the liquid on the upper regions of the separator vessel.

    • This invention relates to the decontamination of liquors from cleansing processes from the cleansing of animal hair, and fleeces sheared from wool producing animals, generally known in the art as "scour" liquors. Such animal hair and fleeces is often heavily contamined with dust, faeces and residual traces of organic compounds from pesticides. Fleece will also contain large quantities of lanolin and wool greases. Preferably the method for decontaminating scour liquor comprises the steps of adding lime to the liquor, allowing the lime to react with the carbonate and bicarbonates in the liquor, adding an acid metal salt to the liquor to reduce the pH of the liquor, allowing the metal to precipitate as insoluble hydroxide to cause the solids in the liquor to coagulate and flocculate, and removing the coagulated solids from the liquor. In a preferred embodiment the method includes the steps of selecting the lime to comprise Calcium Hydroxide (Hydrated Lime), preferably supplied in the form of a slurry.

    • The invention is concerned with clarifying contaminated liquids and, in one described embodiment, contaminated liquid is continuously supplied (15) to a first vessel (11), a first treatment material (34) is intimately mixed (33) into the contaminated liquid in the first vessel, the contaminated liquid/first treatment mixture is passed to a second vessel (26) and a second treatment material (36) is added to the contaminated liquid and first material mixture and intimately mixed therewith (35). The first treatment material preferably comprises one or more compound of the group including soluble magnesium salts, ferrous salts, manganous compounds and cuprous compounds and the second material is an alkali intended to reduce the pH of the final mixture. After the second treatment material has been added the impurities separated out from the final mixture are extracted from one outlet from the second vessel and clarified liquid is discharged from another outlet of the second vessel.
