    • A screen bowl decanter centrifuge comprises a horizontally rotatable bowl (10) within which a scroll conveyor (46, 60) is coaxially mounted for rotation at a slightly different speed for conveying solids, deposited by centrifugal action on the internal surface of the bowl, towards a solids discharge end of the bowl, the other end of the bowl having a liquids outlet (28). The bowl (10) has an imperforate frustoconical portion (18), which converges towards the solids discharge end and provides a sloping ramp up which solids are drawn by the conveyor out of the liquid pool contained in the bowl, and a perforate screen portion (20) downstream of the imperforate frustoconical portion (18) in the direction of solids discharge for assisting dewatering of the solids. The perforate screen portion (20) comprises a first portion (22) downstream of the imperforate frustoconical portion (18), inclined at a first angle with respect to the rotational axis (A – A) of the bowl, and a second, divergent portion (24), considered in the direction of solids discharge, downstream of the first portion (22) and inclined at a second angle with respect to the rotational axis of the bowl. The scroll conveyor (46, 60) is located adjacent to both the imperforate portion (18) and the perforate screen portion (20) of the bowl.

    • An apparatus which performs solids particles separation from a liquids/solids slurry, and subsequent drying of such solids particles, within a single enclosure. Further processing functions, such as reslurry washing, plug washing, crystal growth and other reactions, can also be carried out within that single enclosure. The single enclosure comprises a partly perforated centrifuge drum (2) which can be rotated about a vertical axis at a fast speed at which the centrifugal effects on material in the drum are substantial so that partly dried solids collect in a substantially cylindrical form on the side wall of the drum, and a slow speed at which the centrifugal effects on material in the drum are negligible; a stripping mechanism (10) which is displaceable within the drum (2), when the drum (2) is rotated at slow speed, for dislodging solids which have been built up on the side wall of the drum during rotation at high speed ; and means (15) for heating at least a bottom part of the drum on which partly dried solids collect when dislodged by the stripping mechanism from the side wall of the drum. The solids can themselves thus be heated, or otherwise processed, to cause evaporation therefrom of any remaining liquid.

    • A multi-phase separation process which is particularly useful in connection with the cleaning of cuttings resulting from conventional oil drilling techniques.
      A mixture of carrier liquid (sea water), a contaminant liquid (oil) and solids cuttings is passed over the screen of a screen bowl centrifuge while simultaneously washing the mixture with further sea water whereby a finer portion of the solids particles is washed through the screen taking with it the contaminant liquid oil which has been washed off the solids by the sea water and which adheres to the finer solids particles, thereby leaving the remaining, larger solids particles substantially free of oil of the "available" type which adheres to solids particles by surface tension forces only and can therefore be detached from such particles solely by immersion or washing in the carrier liquid.
      Separation of the finer solids particles from the sea water carrier liquid is achieved in a secondary centrifuge.
