    • Measurement technique and apparatus for examining a region of a patterned surface such as an integrated circuit (IC). Excitation x-ray, neutron, particle-beam or gamma ray radiation is directed toward a two-dimensional sample area of the IC. Emissions (e.g., x-ray fluorescence - XRF) from the sample area are detected. A mask is placed in a planar radiation path formed by the source, detector and the sample area, and in one embodiment moveable relative to the sample area. The mask includes an elongate aperture to substantially confine the excitation radiation directed to the sample area, and the emissions from the sample area, to the planar radiation path when arranged parallel to a first axis of the two-dimensional sample area. The invention allows predictive measurement of feature characteristics in active circuit regions of the IC, using sample areas outside of these regions.

    • A pattern transfer method wherein energy is applied to a transfer medium in which a transfer material is held on a support member, along an object pattern while the transfer medium is kept close to or in contact with an object, and the transfer material is thereby made to adhere to the object material along the object pattern, whereby a transfer operation is carried out. An apparatus for implementing this method, and a transfer medium are also disclosed. The transfer material of the transfer medium is a material containing an adhesive material which exhibits a bonding power to the object material when energy is applied thereto and/or a variable volume material the volume or capacity of which increases when energy is applied thereto. Energy is applied to the transfer medium along the object pattern so as to allow the transfer material to adhere to the object material along the object pattern and project the same at the same time, whereby the projecting pattern is transferred. This method enables plain paper to be used as the object to which a pattern is transferred, and a projecting pattern and ordinary printing are simultaneously made selectively in a normal wordprocessing way. Moreover, a projecting pattern is formed simultaneously with the transfer thereof, it is possible to form a projecting pattern, such as Braille at a very high speed which is close to a conventional regular printing speed.
