    • A mercury free arc tube for a discharge lamp has a closed chamber filled with rare gas and a metal halide containing at least Na halide, Sc halide and In halide, and electrodes. A ratio of a filled amount of the In halide to a total filled amount of metal halide is ranging from 0.1 to 2.0 wt %. When the ratio of the charging amount of InI is 0.1 wt % or more, the chromaticity x, y of a luminescent color during a stable discharge falls within a chromaticity standard range A of white light source. When the ratio of charging amount of InI is 2.0 w % or less, a chromaticity y minimal value of luminescence of the arc tube at the transient time is 0.29 or more, whereby purplish red color is less conspicuous and there is no fear that an emission of the arc tube is misidentified a red marker lamp.

    • An arc tube provided with a central sealed chamber 12, in which light-emitting substances are enclosed, having a pair of electrode assemblies disposed opposite to each other. The electrode assemblies are sealed in pinch seal portions 13. The arc tube incorporates a residual-compressive-stress layer 16 formed on a surface of the glass layer 15 in each of the pinch seal portions 13 that contacts the electrode rod 6 included in each electrode assembly. The residual-compressive-stress layer has a length greater than or equal to 30% of the axial length of a glass layer region that only contacts the electrode rod 6 and/or an angular range greater than or equal to 180° in a circumferential direction of the electrode rod. Thermal stress (tensile stress) produced in the boundary between the glass layer 15 and the electrode rods 6 after the arc tube 10 has been turned on is absorbed and dispersed by the residual-compressive-stress layer 16 surrounding the electrode rods 6. Thus, any vertical crack that would result in the light-emitting substances leaking from the sealed chamber does not form in the glass layer 15 of the pinch seal portions 13.

    • An arc tube having a closed glass bulb having no broken-off portion, and a method of manufacturing the arc tube. A glass bulb is formed on a glass tube substantially at the middle. An electrode assembly is inserted into one end portion of the glass tube, and the one end portion is closed by pinch-sealing. A light emitting material is supplied into the glass bulb through the other end portion of the glass tube, another electrode assembly is inserted into the other end portion, and the latter is closed by pinch-sealing. Since the closed glass bulb has no broken-off portion, the arc tube is free from the difficulty that the distribution of light is adversely affected. Moreover, in manufacturing the arc tube of the invention, it is unnecessary to connect an exhaust tube to the glass tube. Therefore, the number of manufacturing steps is small, and the arc tube can be manufactured with ease.

    • A method of manufacturing an arc tube having a light emitting tube portion, a first pinch seal portion, and a second pinch seal portion, all formed on a quartz glass tube. The first and second pinch seal portions are disposed on both sides of the light emitting tube portion. The quartz glass is provided almost vertically with the first pinch seal portion down. A thermal insulating plate is provided in a boundary position between the light emitting tube portion and a portion to be pinch-sealed in an outer peripheral space of the quartz glass tube. Liquid nitrogen is jetted from a cooling nozzle provided obliquely below the light emitting tube portion toward the same, thereby cooling the light emitting tube portion. The portion to be pinch-sealed is heated with a burner, and pinch-sealed with a pincher immediately thereafter.
