Also, a three-dimensional image display apparatus (40; Figure 3) comprises: an illuminating optical source (laser; not shown) generating an optical signal (42); a two dimensional variable spatial optical modulator (e.g. transmissive LCD, 44); variable focal plane focusing means, such as a lens (46), mounted for movement along its optical axis; and directing means controlling the focal point position in the focal plane, e.g. XY scanning mirror (50). The recording apparatus 10 and display (40) may be used together, applied to confocal microscopy.
