    • The methods and apparatus of the present invention permit a stable body pocket (3) to be formed utilizing multiple biocompatible sheets (10, 14) or using only a single biocompatible sheet (10) positioned to create either a potential space or actual space stable body pocket. The sheets (10, 14) have one surface (16, 12) which permits tissue ingrowth and thereby stably secures the sheet (10, 14) in the desired position. The other sheet surface (18, 20) is non-adhering such that adherence to a facing surface does not occur thereby creating a stable body pocket. In addition, a stable body pocket can be formed by using a biocompatible sheet or sheets (10, 14) having a surface (12, 16) that is selectively capable of permitting tissue ingrowth such that some portions of the surface grows into the surrounding tissue and other portions of the surface (18, 20) do not adhere to the surrounding tissue. In this manner, the stable body pocket apparatus has flexible surface portions. Stable body pocket access channels can also be formed. Such channels can provide stable means for communication between the exterior of the body and a natural or created internal body pocket. A method for forming a stable body pocket utilizing fluid pressure introduced into the space where a body pocket is desired is also in accord with the present invention.

    • A cardiac assist device (30) including (a) a cup or like device (31) adapted to receive at least ventricular portions of a heart muscle therein; (b) within the cup (31), a diaphragm member (35) including a cardiac tissue contacting surface (36) having a biointegrating membrane (37) or layer by which at least portions of the diaphragm member (35) become biointegrated with the cardiac tissue; (c) a pneumatic chamber defined between at least a portion of the cup (31) and a portion of the diaphragm member whereby relative positive and negative pressures can be alternately induced in the pneumatic chamber so as to cause, respectively, compression and distension of at least portions of the heart muscle so as to at least assist systole and diastole of the heart muscle. In a particular form the biointegrating membrane or layer (37) comprises a plurality of strips (52) of biointegrating material attached to or forming part of the diaphragm member and separated by portions of the diaphragm member having no biointegrating material.

    • This invention relates to methods and apparatus for making and using node cuffs (14) on transcutaneous or intra-body prosthetic devices (20) such as catheters, to effect improved stability of the prosthesis/tissue opening site interface. In particular, the node cuff apparatus of the present invention provides for positioning of the tissue opening site in a manner which facilitates more rapid establishment of a stably bio-integrated and well healed prosthesis/tissue opening site interface. In addition, in accord with the methods of the present invention, non bio-integrated portions of the node cuff can be simply and easily removed from the underlying prosthetic device to facilitate maintenance of the stably bio-integrated interface. Preferably, this removal takes place after a period of time during which the interface has become stably established. In accord with the methods and apparatus of t he present invention, thus infections or healing difficulties at the prosthesis/tissue opening site interface are greatly reduced, and a more comfortable and stable interface is more rapidly established and more easily maintained.
