[Also in Group XXXIV] To reduce the decelaration forces applied to a light aircraft during an arrested landing, the arrester hook 16 is connected to the aircraft by telescopic elements 12, 13, the outer element 12 being secured at one end to the hook and provided adjacent its other end with a trunnion 20. The other element 13 is provided with a universal joint 18 attached to aircraft structure and extended laterally by trunnions 19, spools 23 being fitted over both sets of trunnions and secured thereon by releasable fastenings 28. Loops 24, 27 of material e.g. undrawn nylon, capable of considerable extension under load are fitted over the spools 23 to absorb shock loads when the hook 16 engages an arrester cable. The loops are renewed after use and to prevent relative rotation between the hook and the aircraft a dog clutch 30 is formed in the outer ends of the elements 12, 13. The nylon shock absorber could be contained within a telescopic unit or a pneumatic or hydraulic shock absorber could be used.

    • 657,144. Driving-chains. MORGAN, R. K. Dec. 6, 1948, No. 31495. [Class 24] A driving-chain comprises a.plurality of wire links A, Fig. 4, connected together by sheet metal connectors B, Fig. 5, the assembly of the chain being effected as indicated in Fig. 3. Each link comprises a length of wire bent to substantially rectangular shape, the two ends being joined as by flash welding. Recesses 4 and 5 are formed on opposite sides of one arm 2 of the link, preferably by stamping operations. The connectors comprise two curved portions 6 joined by a flat portion 7 having opposite end extensions 8. The spaced edges 9 of the portions 6 are separated by a distance less than the thickness of the wire of the links, so that in assembling the chain it is necessary to turn the links to an upwardly extending position relative to the direction of the chain, whereupon the recess 4 or 5 may engage one edge 9 of the connector, and the link can then be slid sideways into the connector. With the links in the normal position, the end extensions 8 of the connectors limit pivotal movement in the reverse direction, thus preventing tangling of the chain, while the curved portions 6 serve to retain a lubricant such as grease within the connector.
