    • An optical fiber position sensor includes an optical fiber cable wound in the shape of a single layer, tightly wound coil, the coil being secured to a first member. A second member, which is linearly movable with respect to the first member, has fixed thereto an LED which is aimed at the coil such that radiation being emitted from the LED is injected approximately tangentially into the coil. Radiation being transmitted through the coil is attenuated as a function of the distance that it travels therethrough and as a result, radiation exiting the coil through the terminations is representative of the location of the movable member with respect to the fixed member.

    • An optical fiber position sensor wherein a first member is rotationally movable with respect to a second member. A generally rod-shaped fiber optic cable is provided having two elongated portions in close axial alignment. The interface surfaces of the two portions have equal face angles of approximately 30-35 degrees from the longitudinal axis. One of the cable portions is secured to the first member and the other cable portion is secured to the second member. When the interface surfaces are parallel, most of the radiation received into the first cable portion from a source of electromagnetic radiation, an LED, is transmitted through to the second cable portion, and when the interface surfaces are non-parallel as a function of the rotation of one of the members with respect to the other, radiation will be reflected at the interface surfaces of the second cable portion in varying amounts as a function of angular displacement of the cable portion relative to the first cable portion, such resulting in attentuation of radiation being transmitted through the cable, that radiation being representative of the location of the movable member with respect to the fixed member.

    • A skimmer craft for removal of a layer of oil or other floating pollutants from the surface of a body of water including a pair of spaced-apart pontoons with a horizontal floor plate extending between the pontoons. A sump box is positioned at the rear of the skimmer plate or floor and defines a fixed water exit with the sump. The floor and sump are vertically adjustable as a unit. The sump box has a horizontally-extending weir through which oil may enter into the sump. The sump includes a comminutor unit which will reduce and break-up agglomerations in the oil. Propulsion units are positioned along the sides of the pontoons and at the bow and stern of the vessel at predetermined locations. The propulsion units may be selectively operated to establish a controlled flow pattern to direct water and the associated oil layer into the flotation pool where the oil layer is skimmed off and directed into the sump. The propulsion units are also operable to pilot the craft.

    • A copying apparatus for synthesizing two images on one piece of copying paper. The apparatus includes a photosensitive body having a photosensitive surface, first and second light exposure assemblies disposed in spaced-apart relationship with respect to the path of rotation of the photosensitive surface and an image development assembly. In the first light exposure assembly, a first original positive image source controls light emitted from a first light source which light is transmitted to the photosensitive surface to create a first latent image of the information in the first original positive image source on a first portion of the photosensitive surface. No latent image is formed in the remainder or second portion of the photosensitive surface. In the second light exposure assembly, a second original positive image source controls light from a second light source, which light is transmitted to the photosensitive surface to form on at least a part of the second portion of the photosensitive surface a second latent image of the information in the second positive image source and to change the electric potential of the first portion of the photosensitive surface corresponding to the first latent image to the same electric potential as the second latent image portion. The photosensitive surface then passes the image development assembly in which toner adheres to the portions of the photosensitive surface on which the latent images have been formed but does not adhere to the portion of the photosensitive surface in which no latent image has been formed, thereby making the portion corresponding to the first and second latent images visible. The visible images are thereafter transferred to a piece of copying paper.

    • A tuned coriolis, angular rate measuring device includes a substantially hollow, generally annular rotor driven by a high-speed, synchronous spin motor. The rotor is made unsymmetrical by mounting within the rotor near its periphey at least a pair of high density masses, the respective masses being located diametrically opposite one another. The rotor is secured within a gimbal structure which is, in turn, mounted in tuned fashion upon a support housing through a cantilever spring at each end along the gimbal output axis, thereby providing bearingless, frictionless pivots permitting limited gimbal rotation. A pair of piezo-electric crystals is secured at opposite edges of one of the springs for sensing relative angular motion between the gimbal and the housing. The crystals are electrically paralleled so as to cancel any signals resulting from linear movement between the gimbal and housing.
