    • 897,042. Wrenches. SHELLEY Ltd., R. T. March 14, 1961 [May 10, 1960], No. 16435/60. Class 61. A ratchet spanner has a rotable member 13 provided with a central through opening 15 for engagement with a nut or the like, the member 13 being rotatably mounted in a lever handle 10 carrying a spring pressed pawl 17 located in a slot 12 for engagement with peripheral ratchet teeth 14 on the member 13. The member 13 is formed from flat steel sheet or plate and is a rotatable working fit in the circular opening 11 in a handle formed from flat steel plate or sheet of substantially the same thickness as that from which the rotatable member is formed, the member 13 being retained in the opening by apertured cover plates 19 secured to opposite sides of the handle. The ratchet teeth 14 have short, part circumferential lands 16 between them to provide a substantial bearing area between the member 13 and the inner edge of the opening 11.

[Class 83 (iii).] The rotatable grip a for a hand brace is attached to the end b of the brace by means of perforated discs or spiders c, f and a split spring ring j. The disc c abuts against the inner closed end of the grip a and receives the reduced end d of the brace. Preferably two discs f, g are provided at the outer end of the grip and are secured against an internal shoulder e by burring over the edge of the grip at h, the outer or both discs being dished at g , so that the ring j, located in an annular groove in the brace, may engage between the discs. In an alternative construction one disc f only is provided at the outer end of the grip, the ring j then lying inside the disc and a second spring ring l lying outside of the disc c and in a further modification a ball m may lie between the inner end of the grip and a recess in the end of the brace. The grip may be built up ready for assembly and the brace end pushed into it for securing thereto.

    • 4146. Brown, D. E., and Shelley, Ltd., R. T. Feb. 18. Wind guards for motor-vehicles &c. Windscreen joints of the kind comprising a worm and worm-wheel which serve to operate the screen and hold it in the adjusted position have the worm-wheel arranged in a strap or case which may be contracted upon the wheel to prevent rattling of the joint. The worm-wheel f is preferably plain for a portion of its periphery, and is mounted in a recess or track in a strap or case a formed with extensions c, d which are bored to receive the worm g. The worm is actuated to operate the screen by a handle i formed with eccentric faces k which, when the handle is turned downwards, engage a collar l on the strap causing an axial movement of the worm and a binding of the strap upon the worm-wheel. The wheel may be formed with parts of its periphery plain to form slightly projecting bearing-surfaces, and covering-disks or other enclosing-device may be provided. The wheel may be keyed to a cross-rod forming the base of the screen frame and mounted in side brackets, or the joint may be arranged in various ways for application to the screen.

    • 631,614. Making lifting - jack bodies. SHELLEY, Ltd., R. T., and DARBY, A. May 6, 1947, No. 12156. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XXX] - A method of making a body for a screw lifting-jack consists in pressing and/or raising a sheet-metal blank a to form a ground-engaging base and two semi-cylindrical side portions d which are adapted to be folded upwardly to fit against a hollow pillar h to which they are welded at their upper ends. The blank a, Fig. 4, is pierced from sheetsteel and at each end is a laterallyprojecting lug b. The blank is then pressed, bringing it to the form of Fig. 5, where the central part is left flat but the sides are turned upwards to form lips c and each end becomes a half-cylinder d united to the base by a flared part e, lugs b being shaped to the form of a quarter-cup f. A ring or socket g is then welded to the centre of the flat part or an annular ring or shoulder may have been pressed therein to receive the lower end of the pillar h, the end parts being then folded up and welded at their upper ends to the pillar. The quarter cups f form a housing for the usual bevel gear, which is completed by a cylindrical member k formed from heavier gauge sheet-metal. A bearing for the inner end of the bevel pinion is formed of a pressing j welded to the pillar within the housing. The pillar is preferably rolled from sheet-metal so that a gap is left forming a keyway in which works a key on the usual screw spindle housed within the pillar to prevent the spindle from rotating. Ribs may be pressed in the sides of the body for stiffening.

In a ratchet spanner comprising a member 13 rotatably mounted in a lever handle carrying a spring-pressed pawl 16 for engagement with peripheral ratchet teeth 15 on the member 13, the lever handle is formed by two identical sheet metal pressings 10, 11 spot-welded together with their flanges in edge contact. The pawl 16 is slidably mounted in a housing 17 of channel section welded against the inner face of the handle pressing 10, the channel section part of the housing 17 being received in a rectangular depression 19 in the handle pressing to which it is secured. The handle pressings are secured together by spot-welding together abutting portions of aligned dimples 21 formed in the pressings and the abutting faces of complementary webs 22 on the ends of the pressings. The member 13 has a through opening 14 of non-circular cross-section for engagement with a nut or other part to be rotated.
