    • A power conversion system for driving a load is provided. The power conversion system comprises a power transformer having at least one primary winding circuit and at least one secondary winding circuit, the primary winding circuit being electrically connectable to an AC power source. The system further comprises at least one power cell, each of the at least one power cell having a power cell input connected to a respective one of the at least one secondary winding circuit. Each power cell also has a single phase output connectable to the load. An SCR arrangement including a gate drive and at least one SCR is connected to the power cell input and a DC bus. An SCR controller is connected to the SCR arrangement and the power cell input. The power cell also has a PWM output stage having a plurality of PWM switches connected to the DC bus and the single phase output. A local modulation controller is connected to the PWM output stage. The SCR arrangement and the SCR controller are configured for controlling a DC bus voltage, the PWM switches are configured for controlling power flow to the single phase output, and the local modulation controller is configured for controlling activation of the PWM power switches. The power conversion system further comprises a master controller in communication with the SCR controller and the local modulation controller of each of the at least one power cell. The master controller is connectable to the load to monitor power flow thereto.

    • A method and apparatus for determining accurate stored energy values and effective DC bus voltage values for a voltage source inverter. The technique includes the determination of an effective DC bus voltage for the VSI based on an output voltage and the modulation index of the VSI. Further, an estimated power flow can be integrated to obtain an estimated stored energy, which can then be used to determine the effective DC bus voltage of the VSI. The disclosed technique is accurate in both transient and steady-state conditions, and reduces the effects of long term error accumulation.

    • A system and method for efficiently regulating the fuel consumption of a variable speed combustion engine used to control loads such as a hoist motor in a mobile gantry crane based on load motor speed commands issued by a crane operator. The system and method can rely on a programmable logic controller to issue engine fuel commands to regulate engine speed based on interpolations derived from data representing the relationship between load motor voltage and engine speed and data representing the relationship between engine speed and engine power capacity. The method may also be used in modified form by combustion engines which need digital fixed speed commands.

    • A power conversion system for driving a load is provided. The power conversion system comprises a power transformer having at least one primary winding circuit and at least one secondary winding circuit, the primary winding circuit being electrically connectable to an AC power source. The system further comprises at least one power cell, each of the at least one power cell having a power cell input connected to a respective one of the at least one secondary winding circuit. Each power cell also has a single phase output connectable to the load. A power switching arrangement including at least one power switch is connected to the power cell input and a DC bus, and a switch controller is connected to the power switching arrangement and the power cell input. The power cell also has a PWM output stage having a plurality of PWM switches connected to the DC bus and the single phase output. A local modulation controller is connected to the PWM output stage. The switch controller is adapted for monitoring and controlling a DC bus voltage according to a predetermined control methodology in both a motoring mode in which power from the AC power source is supplied to the load by the at least one power cell and a regeneration mode in which power from the load is supplied to the AC power source by the at least one power cell. The power conversion system also comprises a master controller in communication with the switch controller and the local modulation controller of each of the at least one power cell. The master controller is connectable to the load to monitor power flow thereto.

    • A method and apparatus for transferring an AC machine between non volts per hertz drive and a power supply such as supply mains, or a generator. In a transfer procedure, the motor drive is placed in a quasi-voltage mode prior to transfer to permit the output of the motor drive to be synchronized to the output of the power supply. In capture procedure, the output of the drive is preconditioned based on detected states of the AC machine to synchronize the voltage at the terminals of the AC machine with the output of the drive. During the capture procedure, opening of a contactor is detected by comparing the frequency and/or voltage at the terminals of the AC machine with that of the power supply.

    • A system and method for starting and regulating a wound rotor motor especially during the period between inactivity and a speed determined by the voltage ratings of the drive system. In a first embodiment, a starting resistor and a starting bypass contactor are connected between the rotor of the motor and a low voltage source inverter. In an alternative embodiment, the arrangement of the first embodiment is altered by connecting a shorting contactor on one side to the junction of the voltage source inverter, the starting resistor and the starting bypass contactor so as to be short circuited on the opposite side of the shorting contactor.
