    • The present invention outlines structures and methods for delivering a controllable amount of energy to a patient by automatically compensating for the load impedance detected by an implantable-cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). The invention employs high speed, switching power converter technology for the efficient generation of high energy, arbitrarywaveforms. Unlike a linear amplifier, switching power converters deliver high-energy waveforms with an efficiency that is independent of the size and amplitude of the desired waveform. An ICD that uses a switching power converter to deliver the desired energy to the patient stores the energy to be delivered in a storage capacitor. The converter then transforms this energy into an arbitrarily shaped output voltage-controlled or current-controlled waveform by switching the storage capacitor in and out of the output circuit at a high rate of speed. Preferably, the waveform comprises a ramp-type waveform.

    • A generator embodying the invention comprises a removable fuel tank that is easily accessible, and may be easily removed from the generator. The generator includes a frame that supports an engine and the fuel tank. The fuel tank is removably interconnected to the frame with at least one quick release fastener. The quick release fastener may include a bolt, a pivoting tab, a clamp, or other similar quick release fasteners. Preferably, the quick release fastener may be engaged by hand, and does not require additional tooling. A fuel line between the fuel tank and the engine includes a quick disconnect attachment that prevents fuel flow and easily detaches the fuel tank from the engine. The fuel tank may be removed from the frame, taken to a gasoline station for refilling, and reattached to the generator for operation.

    • An implantable transvenous defibrillation/cardioversion lead. The lead extends from a proximal end carrying electrical connectors to a bifurcated distal end. Distal to the bifurcation are a first, generally straight leg and a second, curved leg. In use, the distal end of the first, generally straight leg is located in the apex of the right ventricle and the distal end of the second, generally curved leg is located in the outflow tract from the right ventricle, with the point of bifurcation located approximately adjacent the tricuspid valve. Elongated coil electrodes are provided extending along the straight and curved legs, distal to the point of bifurcation of lead. The lead may be used in conjunction with a subcutaneous or othe additional defibrillation/cardioversion electrode.
