    • Methods for imparting an image to a painted exterior surface on a motor vehicle and kits for use in such methods are described. The methods include applying a mask to an outer clearcoat layer of the painted exterior surface, the mask having a masked portion that covers part of the clearcoat layer and an open portion that leaves part of the clear coat layer exposed, the masked and open portions cooperating to define the image, abrading the exposed part of the clearcoat layer to provide it with a matte finish, and removing the mask to reveal an image having a matte finish region and an unabraded region. The clearcoat layer in the matte finish region of the image is capable of being provided with a surface gloss appearance that is consistent with the surface gloss appearance of the clearcoat layer in the unabraded region of the image and without painting the surface of the motor vehicle. The kits comprise a mask that is adapted to be removably attached to the outer clearcoat layer and an abrasive that is capable of removing a portion of the outer clearcoat layer to generate an image having a matte finish region and an unabraded region, and one or more materials that may be used to provide the outer clearcoat layer in the matte finish region of the image with a surface gloss appearance that is consistent with the surface gloss appearance of the clearcoat layer in the unabraded region of the image.

    • A spotlight is provided that employs stationary motors for positioning a light beam at a desired azimuth and elevation such that there is no blind spots of the light beam at the zenith of the azimuth and elevation. A drive train rotates the spotlight about a horizontal axis and allows the motor driving the rotation to have a stationary mounting in a base while at the same time providing the light beam of the spotlight with a range of elevation that exceeds 90 degrees from a horizontal reference plane at any desired azimuth. More particularly, a stationary motor drives a capstan, which includes a spool that winds and unwinds a cable connected to a lamp assembly of the spotlight for positioning the light beam at a desired elevation. The cable is communicated between the lamp assembly and the capstan by way of a central bore in a mast that supports the lamp assembly for rotation about a vertical axis.

    • A flash strobe power supply adapted for controlling alternately the energization of a pair of flash lamps includes a trigger timing device for generating a series of positive pulses and a series of negative pulses spaced in time from the positive pulses by a predetermined interval. First and second energy storage devices are provided for repeatedly charging incrementally during successive charging cycles and for storing a charge to be applied to respective first and second flash lamps. An inverter oscillator circuit includes a pulse width modulator and a transformer for generating a quasi-squarewave signal whose frequency is greater than the frequency of the positive and negative pulses to control the incremental charging of the energy storage devices. First and second switching devices deliver when conductive the charge stored in the first and second energy storage devices to their respective first and second flash lamps. A first switching means is responsive to the positive pulses of the timing device for rendering it conductive to permit the discharging of the charge stored in the first energy storage device through the first flash lamp. The second switching device is responsive to the negative pulses of the timing device for rendering it conductive to permit the discharging of the charge stored in the second energy storage device through the second flash lamp. Antisaturation circuit responsive to the quasi-squarewave signal prevents saturation of the primary winding of the transformer by disabling of the pulse width modulator which avoids further incremental charging of the first and second storage devices.
