    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for carburizing workpieces, when various workpieces having edge parts are subjected to carburizing by a plasma carburizing method, with which the difference in a carbon concentration between the edge parts and a flat part is reduced, and which suppresses the production of network carbides generated at the edge parts upon cooling, and further simultaneously solves the problems mentioned in the patent literature 1. SOLUTION: The method for carburizing workpieces having edge parts includes: a plasma carburizing treatment (a carburizing treatment step) of storing workpieces having edge parts into a vacuum furnace, feeding a carburizing gas into the vacuum furnace and performing glow discharge; and the subsequent step (a diffusion step) of diffusing carbon in the surface layers of the workpieces into the workpieces by a neutral or reducing gas plasma treatment including an inert gas represented by argon.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating an article with a liquid, which can extremely simplify surface treatment for the article by automatically draining a treatment liquid remaining in an upwardly facing recess part of the article to the outside of the article without rolling or tilting the article, in liquid treatment for various articles, and to provide a drain pipe.
      SOLUTION: A reverse U-shaped drain pipe is formed of a short pipe part having an open end on its bottom end, a long pipe part having an open end at its lower part, and a connecting pipe part which connects the short pipe part and the long pipe part. The method for treating the article includes: inserting the short pipe part into the upwardly facing recess of the article to be treated; arranging the long pipe part so as to hang down to the outside of the article; immersing the article in this state into the treatment liquid in a treatment tank; raising the article after having immersed the article; and draining the treatment liquid which has entered into the recess to the outside of the article through the drain pipe.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface hardening method for an engine valve harmless for the environment instead of a salt bath nitriding method (Tufftride TF-1) accompanied by cyanogen waste water and cyanogen-containing industrial waste and a fluoride film activation type gas soft nitriding method requiring harmful exhaust gas treatment equipment.
      SOLUTION: In the surface hardening treatment method for an engine valve, a gaseous mixture comprising a carbon feeding compound (s) and a nitrogen feeding compound (s) being gas at 150°C under the atmospheric pressure as essential component is heated to ≥200°C under the atmospheric pressure; owing to the catalytic action of an engine valve as the metallic material to be treated, a metallic inner wall of a furnace and/or a metallic catalyst installed in the furnace, HCN is produced in the above atmosphere; the produced HCN is made to act on the surface of the engine valve to modify and activate a passivated film on the surface; and, successively, gas nitriding and/or gas nitriding-carburizing is performed at 400 to 600°C.
