    • A method for determining formaldehyde, in particular a method which enables formaldehyde gas present in air to be collected and its concentration to be easily determined. The method comprises the steps of: passing a given amount of the air to be examined through a collecting vessel containing a given amount of a 2N KOH solution or 2N NaOH solution; injecting a given amount of an AHMT reagent into the vessel and then allowing the vessel to stand for a given time; setting a solution of a standard color in an absorptiometer to adjust the absorptiometer so as to indicate a given value; and introducing a given amount of a KIO4 reagent into the vessel, setting the vessel in the absorptiometer, and determining the formaldehyde concentration from the indicated absorptiometer value. The formaldehyde gas contained in air can be efficiently collected with the 2N KON or 2N NaOH solution. By adjusting the absorptiometer so as to indicate a given value with a standard colored solution based on a given amount of the air to be passed through the collecting vessel, the value indicated by the absorptiometer for an unknown sample can be read directly in terms of the formaldehyde concentration. Thus, the calculation using the molecular weight of formaldehyde, the volume correction factor of the gas, etc. is unnecessary, and hence neither technical knowledge nor a chemical calculation is necessary. Further, since the sample solution need not be transferred or divided, skilled handling is also unnecessary.

    • A gas collecting apparatus adapted to collect a gas to be examined, such as noxious gas diffused into the atmospheric air, and determine the concentration thereof, and more particularly a small gas collecting apparatus for easily determining the concentration of an object gas with a high accuracy. This apparatus is provided with a portable air pump driven by a portable battery and sucking a gas from the space to be examined; a collecting container containing a collecting liquid for collecting a gas from the sucked gas; an introduction flow passage connected at one end thereof to the collecting container and communicating at the other end thereof with the object space to be examined, and adapted to introduce gas into the collecting container; a suction flow passage connected at one end thereof to the collecting container and at the other end thereof to a suction port of the air pump, and adapted to introduce the gas in the collecting container into the air pump; a storage connected to the delivery port of the air pump, adapted to store the gas delivered from the air pump and functioning as a volumeter; a drying means provided between the storage and the collecting container and adapted to dry gas; a pressure switch adapted to detect the inner pressure of the storage; a bypass flow passage connecting the storage to the suction port of the air pump by bypassing the collecting container; and a change-over means adapted to switch the flow passage so as to connect the storage to either the delivery port of the air pump or the bypass flow passage, and connect when the storage is connected to the bypass flow passage the delivery port of the air pump to an atmospheric air opening passage. Since this apparatus has a simple construction in which the collecting container and drying means are provided in the suction port of the portable air pump and the storage is provided in the delivery port thereof, these components can be assembled compactly. Therefore, this gas collecting apparatus is portable and has a high portability, and adjustment in assembling the component is unnecessary. This apparatus is capable of collecting a gas at an arbitrary place easily, and being handled simply and used by any person without requiring any skill.
