    • An arteriovenous shunt assembly including a shunt having a hollow bore between open first and second ends thereof and a valve slidably disposed through the hollow bore. The valve includes means for retaining the valve in a closed position or in any of various selected open positions that provide corresponding different rates of blood flow through the shunt assembly. In some embodiments, the AV shunt assembly is self-expandable from a collapsed tow-profile configuration employed during transluminal delivery. The valve position in the hollow bore may be adjusted in vivo by inflating a catheter balloon in a blood vessel to bear against an end of the valve. Methods for using the shunt assembly are also disclosed.

    • A catheter system for positioning of an instrument within a body. The catheter system includes a hub defining a lumen therethrough for passage of the instrument and an elongate tubular member defining a lumen therethrough. The lumen of the tubular member is in communication with the lumen of the hub. The system also includes a slitter member that is coupled to the hub. The slitter member is disposed to slit the tubular member. The slitter further includes a moveable member that is moveably coupled to the hub and that is coupled to the tubular member, the moveable member is operable to advance the elongate tubular member toward the slitter member as the moveable member is moved relative to the hub. The slitter member thereby slits the elongate tubular member.

    • A bifurcated catheter includes a first catheter branch having a first distal portion and a second catheter branch having a second distal portion. The first and second distal portions are linked together for delivery to the bifurcated region. Upon delivery to the bifurcated region, the first and second distal portions are released from each other such that the first and second catheter branches may be tracked into first and second vessel branches, respectively. The first and second distal portions can be linked together by an appendage disposed on the first distal portion that is sized and shaped such that the appendage fits snugly within a distal opening of the second distal portion, a cup disposed on the first distal portion that is sized and shaped to snugly receive the second distal portion, moving pocket disposed on the first distal portion and slidable relative to the first distal portion that is sized and shaped to snugly receive the second distal portion, or a sheath coupled to the first distal portion and wrapped around the second distal portion.

    • A convertible balloon catheter for use as either an over-the-wire catheter or a rapid exchange catheter, comprising a flexible outer shaft, flexible inner shaft, angioplasty balloon, and bifurcate hub. The inner shaft is comprised of a relatively elastic, deformable material and forms an inflation lumen. The inner inflation shaft is attached to the outer shaft, and has a cross section that is radially collapsible to increase the size of a full-length guide wire lumen formed between an outer surface of the inner shaft and an inner surface of the outer shaft. Formed in the outer shaft is a hatch, which covers a guide wire port. The hatch has a perforated peripheral edge which allows the hatch to be removed. The balloon is simply constructed with essentially four components, which significantly reduces the labor required for assembly.
