    • A machining system comprising a plurality of different kinds of single purpose machining units arranged at plural machining stations located along a transfer path, and a transfer apparatus for transferring plural kinds of workpieces along the transfer path so as to position each of the workpieces at plural machining stations successively for machinings by the plural single purpose machining units. The machining system is provided with a return conveyor or a transfer vehicle for transferring the workpieces along a return path from the end of the transfer path to a workpiece unloading station, and a numerically controlled general purpose machine tool arranged adjacent to the return path. The general purpose machine carries out special machinings which cannot be carried out by the single purpose machining units for machining some workpieces which require such special machinings. Workpieces which do not require the special machinings are directly transferred from the end of the transfer path to the workpiece unloading station. The general purpose machine also memorizes plural numerical control programs corresponding to machinings carried by the single purpose machining units, and selectively carries out the numerical control programs when a malfunction occurs in one of the single purpose machining units.

    • In a transfer machine of the type that workpieces are transferred to a plurality of machining stations one after another by reciprocatively moving a horizontally extending transfer bar in a vertical direction and a longitudinal direction thereof, a plurality of transfer turn tables for holding the workpieces are arranged on the transfer bar in a serial fashion and are rotatably carried thereon each for rotatable about a vertical axis. A guided member bodily rotatable with each of the turn tables is formed with a guided groove, which is maintained engaged with a fixed guiding rail during the axial feed movement of the transfer bar, but is engaged with a turn drive claw only at at least one machining station where the angular position of the turn table has to be changed. The drive claw is rotatably carried at the at least one machining station in alignment with the guiding rail and is drivingly connected with a turn drive motor so as to change the angular position of the turn table at the at least one machining station.

    • A cam milling machine having a headstock and a tailstock, which are fixed on a bed and are horizontally spaced from each other for carrying at a time two camshafts to be rotatable respectively on their axes which extend horizontally in parallel relation with each other. A tool support carrier is guided on the top of the headstock and is movable by an index feed device in a horizontal direction parallel to the axis of each camshaft. Two tool supports each carrying a milling cutter are carried on the tool support carrier to be vertically movable by respective tool feed devices, each for moving the milling cutter associated thereto toward and away from one of the camshafts. Further, transfer bars horizontally extend across the space between the headstock and tailstock, so that unfinished camshafts are loaded two at a time into the machine from the front of the machine and after machining, are unloaded from the rear of the machine.
