    • A liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate and a second substrate, a liquid crystal layer between the first and second substrates, and an alignment layer between the liquid crystal layer and at least one of the substrates. The liquid crystal layer contains liquid crystal molecules having a negative anisotropy of dielectric constant. The alignment layer aligns the liquid crystal molecules perpendicular to the substrate. The liquid crystal display device further includes pixels. Each pixel includes a plurality of subpixels expressing different colors. Each subpixel includes a stepped layer therein such that the stepped layer is disposed between the liquid crystal layer and at least one of the substrates. The stepped layer defines a first region and a second region in the subpixel. The thickness of the liquid crystal layer is relatively thick in the first region and relatively thin in the second region. The area ratio of the first region depends on a color expressed by the subpixel.

In the above-mentioned structure, a colored region having the colored layer formed therein and a non-colored region not having the colored layer formed therein are provided in a portion of the colored layer that is arranged in the reflective display region, and the alignment regulators are arranged so as to overlap the non-colored regions of the color filter layer in the reflective display regions in plan view.

    • Aspects of the invention can provide a transflective liquid crystal display device of vertical alignment mode capable of suitably controlling the direction that liquid crystal molecules are tilted. The liquid crystal display device can include a liquid crystal layer interposed between a pair of substrate and transmissive and reflective display regions in each dot region. An insulating film for varying the thickness of the liquid crystal layer in the reflective and transmissive display regions is provided. On a substrate having the insulating film formed thereon, an electrode slit for controlling the alignment of the liquid crystal molecules can be formed in the reflective display region. Similarly, a convex portion for controlling the alignment of the liquid crystal molecules can be formed in the transmissive display region.
