    • A liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate and a second substrate, a liquid crystal layer between the first and second substrates, and an alignment layer between the liquid crystal layer and at least one of the substrates. The liquid crystal layer contains liquid crystal molecules having a negative anisotropy of dielectric constant. The alignment layer aligns the liquid crystal molecules perpendicular to the substrate. The liquid crystal display device further includes pixels. Each pixel includes a plurality of subpixels expressing different colors. Each subpixel includes a stepped layer therein such that the stepped layer is disposed between the liquid crystal layer and at least one of the substrates. The stepped layer defines a first region and a second region in the subpixel. The thickness of the liquid crystal layer is relatively thick in the first region and relatively thin in the second region. The area ratio of the first region depends on a color expressed by the subpixel.

    • A liquid crystal device includes a first substrate, a second substrate that is disposed to face the first substrate, a liquid crystal layer that is interposed between the first substrate and the second substrate, a plurality of first signal lines and a plurality of second signal lines that extend in directions intersecting each other in a surface of each of the substrates, and a plurality of pixels that are driven via pixel switching elements disposed to correspond to intersections of the plurality of first signal lines and the plurality of second signal lines. Each of the plurality of pixels has a transmissive display region that emits light incident from the second substrate to the first substrate, and reflective display regions that reflect light incident from the first substrate. The liquid crystal layer has liquid crystal having negative dielectric constant anisotropy. Each of the plurality of pixels has an alignment controller that controls alignment directions of liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer, and a liquid-crystal-layer thickness adjusting layer that makes the thickness of the liquid crystal layer in each reflective display region thinner than the thickness of the liquid crystal layer in the transmissive display region. In each of the plurality of pixels, the reflective display regions are disposed at least on both ends of an extension direction of the first signal lines.

    • The invention provides, as an aspect thereof, a transflective liquid crystal display panel that includes: a first substrate that has a plurality of pixel areas, each of the plurality of pixel areas having a transmissive area and a reflective area; and a second substrate that is provided opposite to the first substrate with a liquid crystal layer being sandwiched therebetween. In the configuration of a transflective liquid crystal display panel according to this aspect of the invention, the second substrate has (1) a color filter that corresponds to a plurality of color components, the color filter that corresponds to the plurality of color components having such an array pattern that corresponds to the plurality of pixel areas, (2) a phase difference layer that is formed on the liquid-crystal-layer-side face of the second substrate so as to correspond to the reflective area, and (3) a member that lowers a light transmission factor, the light-transmission-factor reduction member being formed at a region that at least overlaps, when viewed in plan, the side portion of the phase difference layer.

    • To reduce the operation time of the manufacturing process by decreasing the delay in the time required for injecting the liquid crystal due to the projections formed on the panel for controlling the alignment of the liquid crystal. Protrusions for controlling the alignment of liquid crystal are disposed throughout a panel. The longitudinal axes of the protrusions are arranged so that they are not in parallel with (or, more specifically, they are substantially orthogonal to) an edge of the panel having a liquid crystal inlet. In this way, the flow resistance of the liquid crystal is reduced, and the liquid crystal can be injected smoothly.
