摘要： An optical fiber that includes a core containing a first concentration of germanium, an inner cladding arranged on the core, the inner cladding containing a second concentration of germanium and having a first diffusion coefficient, and an outer cladding arranged on the inner cladding, the outer cladding having a second diffusion coefficient, where the first diffusion coefficient is larger than the second diffusion coefficient, and where the first concentration of germanium is about 200% or more of the second concentration of germanium. An optical fiber constructed in this manner can be spliced with an optical fiber having a different MFD, such as a single-mode optical fiber or an erbium-doped optical fiber, with low splice loss and a sufficient splicing strength.

摘要： In image signal storing method and apparatus, a continuous tone image signal representing a continuous tone image and a binary image signal representing a binary image, which carries information giving specifics about the continuous tone image, are obtained. A redundancy imparting process is carried out on the binary image signal in accordance with irreversible signal compression processing such that the information represented by the binary image signal may not be reduced when the irreversible signal compression processing is carried out. Thereafter part of the continuous tone image signal, which part corresponds to part of the region in the continuous tone image, is replaced by the binary image signal, which has been obtained from the redundancy imparting process. The irreversible signal compression processing is then carried out on an image signal, which has been obtained from the replacement. An image signal, which has been obtained from the irreversible signal compression processing, is then stored.

摘要： A radiation image read-out apparatus comprises an automatic developing machine for carrying out a developing process on silver halide film, on which a radiation image has been recorded as a latent image, while the silver halide film is being passed through the automatic developing machine. A film digitizer is connected to the automatic developing machine such that it may directly receive the silver halide film having been fed out of the automatic developing machine. The film digitizer photoelectrically reads out the radiation image, which has been converted into a visible image during the developing process, from the silver halide film and thereby generates an image signal representing the radiation image. The radiation image read-out apparatus is free of the problems in that considerable time and labor are required to set the film manually in the film digitizer, and the film becomes stained with finger marks, dust, or the like.

摘要： A detachable storage unit is connected to host equipment in a computer system and holds an ejectable storage medium. The storage unit has a connection detector that detects whether or not the storage unit is connected to the host equipment, and a storage medium detector that detects the presence of a storage medium within the storage unit. A medium ejection instructor sends a medium ejection instruction to an automatic medium ejection mechanism upon receiving information that indicates that the storage medium might be moved. The storage medium is then ejected from the storage unit which prevents damage caused by the storage medium colliding with internal components of the storage unit while the storage unit is being moved.
