    • 182,712. Johnson, M. W. Aug. 7, 1921. Hot air and gas engines. - A hot air or gas engine is of the closed-circuit type, the air or gas being at a high initial pressure and the heat of the exhaust being utilized to heat the inlet 'gas and also the air and gas supplies to the furnace. In the form shown, gas from a pipe 33 is compressed in a pump cylinder 9 in line with the power cylinder 10 and passes in succession through a pipe 12, exhaust-heated tubes in a transfer apparatus 11, a pipe 19, the tubes of a heater 5, and an inlet pipe 25, to the heat-insulated and non-cooled power cylinder 10, through an exhaust pipe 26, around the tubes of the apparatus 11, and through a pipe 31, the tubes of a cooler 4, and the pipe 33, back to the pump 9. The engine may be worked on an open circuit by opening valves 51, 52 at the ends of the pipe 33. The tubes of the main heater 5 are heated by combustion products from a furnace 6. This is supplied with air by a blower 2 driven by a motor 3, the air passing through an inlet tube 34, around the pipes of the cooler 4, and through a. tubular heater 8 and tubes 37, 38 to the inlet chamber 6a and the combustion chamber 6 of the furnace. The gas supply to the furnace is drawn through a pipe 49, a tubular heater 7 and a pipe 50 to a nozzle 40 surrounded by the air inlet 39, Fig. 10. The combustion products from the furnace pass around the tubes of the main heater 5 and through a pipe 44 to the air heater 8, part of the products also passing through a pipe 47 and around the tubes of the gas heater 7 before escaping through a pipe 48 to the pipe 46. The cooler 4 and the heaters 5, 7, 8, 11 are of the form shown in Fig. 5, comprising tube plates 14, 15 connected by tubes for the medium to be cooled or heated, the ends of the apparatus being closed by heads 13, 16 to form inlet and outlet chambers. The inlet 21 to the head 16 and the inlet 28 admitting the cooling or heating medium to the space around the tubes enter tangentially. When working upon a closed cycle, leakage is made up by dry air supplied to the pipe 33 by a compressor 53.
