Linotype and like machines.-An electric heating- apparatus for melting-pots consists of a resistant grid V , Fig. 2, covered with insulating-material, embedded in the metal of the pot, and connected with the main circuit V of a special dynamoelectric generator, Fig. 1. Another grid V , preferably of iron, is embedded in the pot so as to have the temperature of the melted metal, and is included in the excitation circuit V of the generator ; the thermal variation in its resistance causes inverse variation in the current produced by the generator, the temperature of the pot being thus automatically kept constant. The pot is enclosed in non-conducting material V . The generator is a self-exciting alternator, having stationary, laminated-iron armatures V , and a rotary laminated or solid iron field magnet V . The poles of the field magnet are wound in series, and connected by a commutator with stationary brushes, which receive an alternating current from the exciting circuit V wound on the armatures V . This circuit includes also the resistance v , Fig. 2, a regulating-resistance or choking coil, and a switch. The heating-grid V is connected with independent low-resistance windings V on the armatures V . These windings are built up of U-shaped and straight copper strips, without boltholes, clamped together with intervening insulation by end plates and bolts.

    • A method for confirming the presence of highly refined sesame oil in pharmaceuticals. By extracting, concentrating and detecting sesamin and epi-sesamin, through the method disclosed in the present invention, highly refined sesame oil can be identified. The disclosed method can be performed at room temperature and does not require over night extraction. In practice, the disclosed method entails extracting sesamin from a sample with an organic solvent, transferring and evaporating the solvent layer to dryness to form a residue. An alkyl halide is added to the residue to form a mixture. The mixture and an organic solvent are passed through a separating means, generating an eluent, the eluent is then evaporated to dryness to form a second residue. A 1:1 solution of an organic solvent and an alkyl halide is added to the second residue in a volume sufficient to form a concentrated extract. The concentrated extract is then analyzed with high performance liquid chromatography.
