    • 746,137. Drying coffee beans. WILLIAMS, J. M. March 19, 1954, No. 8160/54. Class 34(2). Apparatus for drying coffee beans or other grains includes a cylindrical chamber 5 with a perforated floor 14 and a spindle 16 carrying arms 20 on a crosspiece 19 and paddles 23 which move the beans over the floor 14 while air heated by a heat exchanger 12 is supplied beneath the floor by a fan within a casing 10, the angle of incidence of the paddles being variable. The paddles are carried on spindles 24 the upper ends of which pass through arms 20 and carry links 26 secured to a common lever 27 operated by a handle 28 and the paddles of one arm are staggered radially with respect to those of other arms. To avoid crushing beans the paddles are raised above the floor 14 and in a modification the arms 20 also carry brushes downward urged by springs so that when the dried beans are discharged through a door in the floor 14, by rotation of the arms with the paddles facing outwardly the brushes sweep the remaining beans from the floor. A roof structure removable on tails may be provided.

    • 538,789. Tuning valve gear and injection of I.C. engines. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and WILLIAMS, T. M. Nov. 14, 1939, No. 30072. [Class 122 (iii)) The movements of the piston and crankshaft of engines or pumps are correlated to some events associated with the operation thereof such as the timing of the valve gear or the injection timing of an I.C. engine. For this purpose the instrument comprises a member such as a rod 18 moved by the piston. This rotates on a displacement indicator comprising two parts 26, 27, movable relatively to one another to a limiting position of relative movement which is reached before the piston reaches the dead-centre position. Mechanism is provided for moving the two parts jointly by further movement of the piston towards the dead centre position when the indicator is locked against joint return movement whilst permitting relative return movement when this piston recedes from the dead-centre positions. Then as the piston moves towards its dead-centre position the two parts 26, 27 move first towards a zero setting. This setting is maintained until the piston reaches the dead-centre position and the indicator is held in this position by the locking means so that displacements of the piston are accurately indicated by the indicator in relation to the dead-centre position. The instrument provides a scale 33 and a pointer 39 both of which are pivoted to a movable carriage mounted on a hub 28 so as to be rotated in opposite directions by the movement of the piston. This arrangement magnifies the relative movement of the scale and pointer for a given piston displacement and a further magnification is obtained particularly for readings near the dead-centre position by cammechanisms between the piston-driven member and the indicator parts. The manner in which the instrument may be employed to check value timing of an internal combuston engine as well as the fuel injections timing is described.
