    • An apparatus includes a hydraulic power steering motor. A continuously variable transmission has an input shaft rotatable under the influence of force transmitted from the engine and an output shaft operable to drive a pump. The continuously variable transmission is operable to drive the pump at a first speed when one of the input and output shafts of the continuously variable transmission rotates at a first speed. The continuously variable transmission is operable to drive the pump at a second speed when the one of the input and output shafts rotates at a second speed. A centrifugal sensor is connected with the one of the input and output shafts. The centrifugal sensor transfers rotational movement of the one of the input and output shafts to a linearly displaceable input member of the continuously variable transmission to change the speed at which the pump is driven.

A release mechanism (70) reduces the force applied by the locking mechanism (60) in response to a sensed vehicle condition.

    • A steering column (10) has a first steering column member (12) movable axially relative to a second steering column member (14). The locking mechanism (10) comprises a fluid (100) having a viscosity which varies in response to an energy field acting on the fluid. The locking mechanism (10) also includes means (108) for varying the viscosity of the fluid (100) by varying the energy field to vary the resistance to movement of the first steering column part (70) relative to the second steering column part (80).

Fluid pressure in the first chamber portion (48) acts on a first area (116) of the piston (46) to cause Linear movement of the member (44) in one direction. Fluid pressure in the second chamber portion (50) acts on a second area (118) of the piston (46) to cause linear movement of the member (44) in a second direction opposite the one direction. The second area (118) of the piston (46) is less than the first area (116) of the piston. A spring (122) acts to urge the member (44) in the second direction. The spring (122) applies a force to the member (44) to balance the forces acting on the member to move the member when the pressure in the first chamber portion (48) equals the pressure in the second chamber portion (50).
