    • 1517. Morcom, R. K., and Walshe, J. M. Jan. 21. Resistances; testing.-A choking-coil is wound on a continuous magnetic core a, Fig. 1, of substantially uniform cross-section, forming a closed magnetic circuit worked at its maximum fluxdensity. The winding consists of strips of metal b, each of which, together with a strip or coating of insulating-material, is wound into a flat spiral, suitable connecting-pieces being provided at each end. Adjacent spirals are insulated from one another by washers c of relatively large diameter, and spaces are maintained by distance - pieces d between the spirals and the washers, to provide for the entrance of water or other cooling - fluid. According to the Provisional Specification, the coils may be constructed of iron strip. The choking-coil is applicable for meters, for starting electric motors, arc lamps, for wireless telegraphy, and for testing purposes. Such a choking-coil may be used for testing an alternator, with the connexions shown in Fig. 7, in which the choking-coil f and plates h, g dipping into a conducting-liquid form an inductive circuit from the alternator e, a parallel non-inductive circuit being formed between the plates h, i. By varying the position of the plate h, the power factor may be varied without appreciably altering the total resistance in the alternator circuit.

    • 4361. Marcom, R. K., and Morris, D. K. Feb. 26. Resistances inductive. Choking-coils of the type described in Specification No. 1517, A.D. 1907. are provided with a heat-proof wall interposed between the core and the surrounding winding, whereby a high temperature may be attained by the core without injuriously affecting the winding. As shown in Fig. 1, the windings a , a of the choking-coil are separated from the limbs b , b of the core by flat tubes c , c wound helically or otherwise, through which water is caused to flow upwards, the water being fed by a pipe d and conducted away by pipes e , e . The windings are separated by an interval to insulate them, or a refractory insulating- substance may be employed to fill the space. If the tubes are of metal, one is wound in a right-handed direction and the other in left-handed direction to eliminate secondary currents ; or the tubes may be connected by rubber tubing. As shown in Fig. 3, concentric walls f , g and f , g are provided, separated by helically or longitudinally corrugated partitions h , h connected at the bottom. Water is fed by a pipe d to the outer space i , i , passes up the inner space j , j , and escapes by pipes e , e . The partitions need not be corrugated. As shown in Fig. 4, a pair of circular tubes c , c are provided, being separated by stout cords m and surrounding an insulating-liner n. The tubes are provided with separate inlet and outlet pipes d , d' and e , e . The walls, partitions, or tubes may be composed wholly or partly of vulcanized fibre.
