    • A pair of nestable caps are disclosed, each of the caps being sized and shaped to provide a protective union about a separated medical connector. The pair comprises a male cap and a female cap, each of which is configured to be adjoined to a complimentary cap to form a nested pair. The nested pair is sealed until separated for use, thereby maintaining sterility of the internal surfaces of the nested pair. An absorbent pad may be impregnated with antiseptic agent and enclosed within the pair to further enhance resulting sterility of each cap as it is used about a medical connector. One of the caps can include a scrubbing chamber having a disposable liner, a pad, and an antiseptic agent. Further, a pliable tube containing a frangible capsule may be coupled to one of the caps to provide antiseptic solution internal to the caps.

    • An apparatus for winding a thread round the stem of a button sewn onto an article of clothing by means of a sewing thread comprises a rotatably mounted winding bell (14) and a button holder (15) which is rotatably and releasably mounted on the winding bell (14). The winding bell is mounted on a hollow drive shaft (36) and a winding thread passes through the hollow shaft (36), through an aperture (54) in the wall of the shaft, through a passage (56) extending through the whipping bell to its outer periphery and passes back towards the winding area by means of a selected one of several apertures (60) in the periphery of the winding bell. The provision of a button holder mounted on the winding bell allows the rear face of a button (78) to be engaged by the holder (50) with its inner face abutting the button holder and allows an operator to apply tension to the sewn shank (80) which secures the button to an article of clothing. The application of tension allows the winding thread to be applied very evenly and securely.

    • An improved system for large scale production of proteins and/or polypeptides in cell culture, particularly in media characterized by one or more of i) a cumulative amino acid concentration greater than about 70 mM; ii) a molar cumulative glutamine to cumulative asparagine ratio of less than about 2; iii) a molar cumulative glutamine to cumulative total amino acid ratio of less than about 0.2; iv) a molar cumulative inorganic ion to cumulative total amino acid ratio between about 0.4 to 1; or v) a combined cumulative glutamine and cumulative asparagine concentration between about 16 and 36 mM, is provided. The use of such a system allows high levels of protein production and lessens accumulation of certain undesirable factors such as ammonium and/or lactate. Additionally, culture methods including a temperature shift, typically including a decrease in temperature when the culture has reached about 20-80% of it maximal cell density, are provided. Alternatively or additionally, the present invention provides methods such that, after reaching a peak, lactate and/or ammonium levels in the culture decrease over time.
