    • A unified web-based voice messaging system provides voice application control between a web browser and an application server via an hypertext transport protocol (HTTP) connection on an Internet Protocol (IP) network. The web browser receives an HTML page from the application server having an XML element that defines data for an audio operation to be performed by an executable audio resource. The web browser selectively executes the audio operation based on whether the web browser detects the presence of the executable audio resource. If the web browser does not have the executable audio resource, then the web browser ignores the XML element, and merely presents any other recognized HTML tags. However if the web browser has access to an executable audio resource that understands the XML element, then the web browser executes the audio operation based on enhanced audio control specified by the XML element. Hence, a web browser can be used to provide enhanced voice control for voice enabled web applications, merely by possession of an executable audio resource that recognizes the XML element that specifies the enhanced audio control required for the audio operation to be performed.

    • An application server, configured for executing a messaging application defined by XML documents, is able to provide messaging services to a calling party for a remote subscriber based on retrieval of subscriber attribute information obtained from a remote information database server (such as LDAP) via an Internet Protocol (IP) network. The application server, upon receiving a voice application operation request having subscriber identifier information from a browser serving the calling party, obtains from the remote information database server attribute information for responding to the voice application operation request based on the subscriber identifier information. The application server generates an HTML document having media content and control tags for personalized execution of the voice application operation based on the attribute information obtained from the standardized database server. The application server also is configured for sending and retrieving messages from a standardized remote messaging server via the IP network.

    • A unified web-based voice messaging system provides voice application control between a web browser and an application server via an hypertext transport protocol (HTTP) connection on an Internet Protocol (IP) network. The application server, configured for executing a voice application defined by XML documents, selects an XML document for execution of a corresponding voice application operation based on a determined presence of a user-specific XML document that specifies the corresponding voice application operation. The application server, upon receiving a voice application operation request from a browser serving a user, determines whether a personalized, user specific XML document exists for the user and for the corresponding voice application operation. If the application server determines the presence of the personalized XML document for a user-specific execution of the corresponding voice application operation, the application server dynamically generates a personalized HTML page having media content and control tags for personalized execution of the voice application operation; however if the application server determines an absence of the personalized XML document for the user-specific execution of the corresponding voice application operation, the application server dynamically generates a generic HTML page for generic execution of the voice application operation. Hence, a user can personalize any number of voice application operations, enabling a web-based voice application to be completely customized or merely partially customized.

    • A unified web-based voice messaging system provides voice application control between a proxy browser having a web browser, and an application server via an hypertext transport protocol (HTTP) connection on an Internet Protocol (IP) network. The proxy browser serves as an HTTP interface for a user device that lacks HTML and HTTP processing capabilites, such as an analog telephone, a cellular telephone, a voice over IP telephone, and the like. The web browser receives an HTML page from the application server having an XML element that defines data for an audio operation to be performed by an executable audio resource within the proxy browser. The audio resource, also referred to as a media resource, selectively executes the HTML tags and the audio operation based on the determined capabilities of the user device. If the user device does not have audio capabilities, the media resource ignores the audio operation, and merely presents the HTML information, assuming the user device has a display. If the media resource determines that the user device has at least a speaker and possibly a microphone, the media resource executes the audio operation based on enhanced audio control specified by the XML element. Similarly, if the media resource determines that the user device does not have a display, the HTML tag information is discarded by the media resource. Hence, a proxy browser can be used by user devices to access enhanced voice control for voice enabled web applications.

    • A notification architecture utilizes multiple processes configured for managing notification operations based on reception of SMTP-based messages within IMAP based message stores. The notification architecture includes a notification process, configured for receiving notification messages for respective subscribers from messaging sources according to a prescribed open protocol such as Internet Protocol. The notification process accesses subscriber profile information from an open protocol-based subscriber directory based on the received notification messages. The notification process determines, for each received notification message, the subscriber's notification preference based on the accessed profile information, and selectively outputs a notification delivery message according to a prescribed open protocol to at least one notification delivery process within the notification architecture based on the subscriber's notification preference. The notification process may have access via the prescribed open protocol to multiple notification delivery processes, each configured for outputting a notification to a subscriber's notification device according to a corresponding device protocol. Hence, subscribers may be notified of events according to their respective preferences, including subscriber device type, or time of notification.
