    • A surge arrester comprising a stack of a plurality of cylindrical varistor blocks (10), preferably made of metal oxide, which are arranged one after the other in the axial direction of the varistor blocks between an upper end electrode (11) and a lower end electrode (12) and surrounded by an elongated, electrically insulating external casing (19) of rubber or other polymeric material. The end electrodes (11, 12) are interconnected by means of at least three clamping members (15) of insulating material to achieve the required contact pressure between the different elements (10-14) in the stack. Between the lower end electrode (12) and the first block (10) in the stack of varistors, there is arranged a pivot means comprising a centrally placed pivot member (17), projecting from the lower end electrode (12), said pivot member (17) making contact with a pressure plate (14), resting against the lowermost block (10) in the stack of varistors, to achieve articulation in all transverse directions.

The polymer insulator is made of a polymer material which under normal operating conditions is resistant to deformation and is arranged with bulges (121) extending in the axial direction of the surge arrester along the length of the entire polymer insulator, the tension rods being arranged in these bulges. Voids (20) are arranged in the polymer insulator between the stack of surge arrester elements and the tension rods, these voids being preferably arranged close to the tension rods arranged in the bulges. The polymer insulator is arranged with notches (122) to enable it to burst in a controlled manner upon an elevated internal pressure.     • The invention relates to a surge arrester comprising a stack of arrester elements (1), for example of zinc oxide, arranged between two end electrodes (2) in an elongated insulating casing (3) of polymeric material, for example EPDM rubber. To mechanically reinforce the arrester, a tube (4) of fibre-reinforced plastic is arranged between the stack of arrester elements (1) and the polymer insulator (3). This tube (4) is manufactured by profile drawing, so-called pultrusion, whereby all reinforcement fibres extend in the axial direction of the tube. This gives the tube (4) a high tensile strength while at the same time the strength in the radial direction is relatively low. This is advantageous in the event of an arrester failure with an internal short circuit, since the tube will then easily crack up and provide a rapid pressure relief without any explosion hazard.
