    • In an embodiment, a multicast communication session is setup at an access network within a wireless communications system, whereby the access network transmits an announce message announcing a current multicast communication session to a given group of access terminals within an initial cluster of sectors. The access network receives a registration request for the current multicast communication session from an access terminal, and selectively loads a stored cluster of sectors that supported a previous multicast communication session to the given group. The access network then turns on a multicast flow for the current multicast communication session within each sector of the stored cluster. In another embodiment, a multicast communication session is terminated whereby the access network stories a formation of the engaged cluster at or near the termination of the current multicast communication session, which can then be used during setup of a subsequent multicast communication session.

    • An access terminal selects less than all of a plurality of flows associated with a given multicast session, arid sends a call registration message including reference to the selected less than all flows to an access network to request registration to each of the plurality of flows. The access network receives the call registration message, and interprets the call registration message as requesting registration to each of the plurality of flows associated with the given multicast session. The access network transmits a scheduling message to a group of access terminals that advertises less than all of a plurality of flows associated with the given multicast session. Access terminals in the group that receive the scheduling message interpret the scheduling message as if each of the plurality of flows is advertised as carried upon a downlink channel.

In another embodiment, the access network selectively transitions a target UE to the DCS based on whether differently sized messages are received at the access network for transmission to the target UE.

    • An access network (AN) periodically broadcasts, to at least one user equipment (UE) served by the AN, a message requesting the at least one UE, whenever the at least one UE determines to perform a given type of transmission, (i) to measure a reverse-link channel upon which the transmission is to be performed, and (ii) to include results of the measurement within the transmission. A given UE receives the periodically broadcasted message from the AN and determines to perform the given type of transmission. The given UE refrains from measuring the reverse-link channel, as instructed by the AN, based on the data being associated with a communication session of a given type. The given UE transmits the data to the AN. If the data transmission omits the requested measurement results, the AN selects a transmission format for subsequent transmissions of the given UE based on the omission.

    • A user equipment (UE) determine to activate a data session. The UE configures a data session activation request message to include an indication of an association with communication sessions of a given type (e.g., delay-sensitive communication sessions), and then transmits the data session activation request message to an access network. The access network determines to establish an aggressive paging cycle of a downlink channel for the UE based in part upon receiving a message (e.g., which can be different than the data session activation request message) that conveys the indication of the association to the access network. The access network sends at least one instruction for facilitating an allocation of the aggressive paging cycle to the UE, and the UE receives the at least one instructions and monitors the downlink channel accordingly.
