    • The present invention relates to phosphorus-containing compositions which are polymeric esters having flame retardant properties and also a process for the production thereof, as well as the combinations of such phosphorus compositions with otherwise combustible base materials exemplified by various organic polymers, for example polyamides or polyesters.The phosphorus compositions of the present invention are polymeric esters having as moieties thereof, (A) an aliphatic alcoholic moiety of an alcoholic reactant of 5 to 20 carbon atoms, and from 2 to 10 or preferably 2 to 6 hydroxyl functional groups, with the proviso that there is no hydrogen atom on the carbon atoms which are beta to the hydroxyl oxygen, (B) a moiety of a phosphorus-containing acid halide, ester or amide reactant of 0 to 20 carbon atoms, and having from 1 to 4 functional groups selected from the group consisting of halogen, ester (--OR) and amide (--NR.sub.2) groups, where R is an aliphatic radical of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and (C) a different alcoholic moiety as defined in (A) or a different phosphorus-containing moiety as defined in (B), the said ester having a degree of molecular aggregation of 2 to 100, and with each of (A), (B) and (C) being present at from 1 mole to 99 mole %, with the proviso that the number of alcoholic functional groups on the alcoholic reactants is equal to the number of the said functional groups on the phosphorus-containing reactants.

    • Substituted phosphonium salts such as tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride are prepared by reacting a metal phosphide selected from the group consisting of lithium phosphide, sodium phosphide, potassium phosphide, beryllium phosphide, magnesium phosphide, calcium phosphide, strontium phosphide, barium phosphide, boron phosphide, aluminum phosphide, gallium phosphide, and zinc phosphide, with an aldehyde having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, the proportion of the aldehyde being at least 4 moles per gram atom of the phosphorus in the said phosphide. The reaction is conducted with at least one and a half moles of water per gram atom of phosphorus in the said phosphide and at least one mole of mineral acid being present per gram atom of phosphorus in the said phosphide, with or without a catalyst, and in the presence of an inert gas atmosphere. The products are fire retardants.

    • The invention relates to novel phosphinate polymers having the formula ##STR1## WHEREIN R is a phenylene or naphthylene group in which the O substituent is nonvicinal to the ##STR2## group, R' is an alkyl group of 1 to 15 carbon atoms or an aryl group of 6 to 15 carbon atoms, and n is from 5 to 50 units. The invention also relates to a process for the production of the novel polymeric phosphinate resins, and to combinations of such polymeric phosphinates with organic polymers such as polyesters, e.g., polyethylene terepthalate, and polyamides, e.g., hexamethylene adipamide. The combination of the present polymeric phosphinates with the organic polymers makes it possible to obtain flame retardant products, for example fibers suitable for carpeting and clothing.
