    • Enhanced wireless speeds are obtained using multiple transmission beams. In one example a transmitter sends data packets through an antenna array using multiple spatial beams and a plurality of analog converters. A receiver receives feedback from a remote station, the feedback including a quality measure of data packets received from the transmitter. A processor to controls transmission parameters of the transmitter using the feedback, the processor having a plurality of states, in a first channel analysis state, the processor determining a beam-forming vector for the antenna array, in a second beam search and training state, the processor determining pre-coding coefficients for the data packets, and in a third high rate transmission state, the processor providing pre-coded data packets to the transmitter for transmission, wherein the processor transitions from the third state to the first state upon receiving a reduced quality measure from the remote station.

    • A pipelined cell search apparatus having a primary search stage, a secondary stage and a Gold code stage. The primary stage receives a primary synchronization channel (P-SCH) signal, detects a maximum peak of a slot boundary in the P-SCH signal, and generates slot timing data from the maximum peak. The secondary search stage receives a secondary synchronization channel (S-SCH) signal and the slot timing data, and detects in the S-SCH signal a maximum peak of a frame boundary. The secondary search stage generates frame timing data and a group ID of a base station transmitting the P-SCH signal and the S-SCH signal. The Gold code search stage receives a common control pilot channel (CPICH) signal, the slot timing data, the frame timing data, and the group ID and detects in the CPICH signal a maximum peak associated with a Gold code of the base station.

    • A signal-to-noise estimator is provided for estimating the signal-to-noise ratio in wireless fading channels. The estimator can be applied to likelihood ratio estimation of turbo decoders in third generation wide-band code division multiple access (WCDMA) systems. Time-multiplexed samples of pilot symbols from a wireless receiver are supplied to the estimator to obtain individual estimates of signal power and/or noise power. The estimator uses a de-correlating filter in which the coefficients are known functions (such as eigen-vectors) of the auto-correlation matrix for a wireless channel. The decorrelating filter is used by the estimator to map an observation vector into a set of statistically independent samples. The energy of each vector component is computed individually and combined to produce an aggregate sum for the vector. The aggregate sum can be subtracted from the pilot tone power in order to produce an estimate of noise power.
