    • There are provided a pressure-sensitive adhesive composition which is excellent in durability, whitening resistance, hot-melt processability, pressure-sensitive adhesion properties, holding power at high temperatures, heat resistance, weathering resistance, compatibility with tackifying resins, low-temperature properties and transparency, is excellent also in balance of these properties and rarely suffers adhesion acceleration, and pressure-sensitive adhesive products using the pressure-sensitive adhesive composition. The pressure-sensitive adhesive composition comprises an acrylic block copolymer (I) having a polymer block (A) comprising methacrylic acid ester units and a polymer block (B) comprising acrylic acid ester units which are derived from an acrylic acid ester (1) represented by the general formula CH 2 =CH-COOR 1 (1) (wherein R 1 is an organic group of 4 to 6 carbon atoms) and an acrylic acid ester (2) represented by the general formula CH 2 =CH-COOR 2 (2) (wherein R 2 is an organic group of 7 to 12 carbon atoms), the mass ratio (1)/(2) of said acrylic acid ester (1) to said acrylic acid ester (2) being 65/35 to 20/80.

    • A fiber of a sea-island phase separation structure in which the sea phase is made of a highly orientable and highly crystalline polyvinyl alcohol polymer, the island phase is made of a water-insoluble cellulosic polymer excellent in alkaline liquid absorbing capacity, heat resistance and difficulty of melting, the size of the island is 0.03 to 10 mu m and the strength is 3 g/d or above and which can easily be separated into fibrils 0.05 to 8 mu m in diameter by wetting the fiber and applying a mechanical stress to the resulting fiber. The above fibril is a hydrophilic and high-strength one which is excellent in the property of capturing fine particles, reinforcing effects, alkaline liquid absorption, and the resistances to heating and melting, does not cause the elution of fiber components in fibrillation, and is freed from the problematic bubbling in beating or the problem of environmental pollution due to a heating solution. The fibril is extremely useful as the separator paper for alkaline batteries, the reinforcing fiber for cement slates, the reinforcing fiber for friction materials, or the like.

    • A process for producing a polymer terminated with optionally protected functional group(s), which comprises conducting free-radical polymerization of a radical-polymerizable monomer by using a polymerization initiator comprising at least one member selected from the group (A) consisting of thiocarboxylic acids of general formula (1) and dithiocarboxylic acids of general formula (2) and at least one member selected from the group (B) consisting of polysulfides of general formula (3), polysulfides of the general formula (4): R -(S)m-R , and sulfoxides of general formula (5). In formula (1) R represents a hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent containing a functional group. In formula (2) R represents a hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent containing a functional group. In formula (3) R and R represent each a hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent containing a functional group; and n represents an integer of 2 or above. In formula (4) R and R represent each a hydrocarbon group having a functional group; and m represents an integer of 2 or above. In formula (5) R and R represent each a hydrocarbon group having a functional group. The process enables a polymer having a high content of functional groups introduced into one or both of its terminals to be produced independently of the rate of polymerization and the degree of polymerization of the product.
