    • An aircraft altimeter which provides a signal indicative of altitude represented in coded form. The altimeter includes an indicator dial, one or more pointers driven by a pointer shaft, and an evacuated capsule coupled to the pointer shaft via a linkage and differential gear mechanism associated with a main shaft cooperating with the linkage such as to effect rotation of the pointer shaft in response to changes in atmospheric pressure with altitude. An encoder disc, which has opaque and non-opaque portions in coded form, is mounted on the main shaft and a light source arranged to direct light on to the disc together with sensing means responsive to the light passing through the disc provide a coded signal representation of the movement imparted to the pointer shaft.

    • The interference patterns that would be recorded on a hologram from a complexly shaped surface such as the surface of an optical element or jet turbine blade, or the like, is calculated in a suitably programmed computer which may be coupled to an automatic plotter. The automatic plotter will then print the interference pattern which would be produced by projection of the pattern on the film in the form of dots of variable spacing or of different shading in order to produce the desired pattern. This printed pattern is then photographed with a high resolution film such as one capable of resolving four-hundred separate dots per millimeter of length, with this film serving as a hologram containing the synthesized interference pattern that represents the computed surface. The hologram or artificial optical template is then illuminated by a laser source so that a virtual image of the computed surface is produced. An object having a surface which is to be compared to the computed surface is then superimposed on the virtual image position so that an interference pattern is produced which describes the difference between the contour of the actual surface and the contour represented by the virtual image of the hologram template. The object may be a work piece which is to be surface eroded until it conforms to the desired pattern in which case the interference pattern is utilized to control the surface erosion operation.

    • An indicating arrangement includes a plurality of tape display systems each including a longitudinally movable display tape having a functional scale and a coded pattern in pre-determined relation thereon. Optical detection units produce digital output signals representative of the actual position of the coded pattern on the tape. An input register produces digital input signals representative of the required position of the coded pattern on the tape. Movement of the tape is controlled by servopositioning means that respond to the digital input and output signals and a central processor is connected to actuate the tape display systems in a time-sharing sequence.

    • A linearizing circuit for producing output signals varying linearly with temperature from input signals derived from a pyrometer head and varying non-linearly with temperature comprising an input amplifier stage responsive to said non-linear input signals, a linearizing network responsive to output signals from the amplifier stage and including a circuit for generating signals representative of the logarithm of the input signal and summation means for adding a portion of the input signal and a fixed value signal to the logarithmic signal to produce an output signal which is substantially linear with temperature and an output amplifier stage responsive to output signals from the linearizing network to produce amplified signals arranged to be supplied to components associated with the pyrometer head and/or fed back to the head.
