摘要： A serving network element for a cellular communication network comprises a transceiver for transmitting and receiving radio frequency (RF) signals to and from at least one wireless communication unit, and a signal processing logic module. The signal processing logic module is arranged to receive transmit power information relating to at least one further serving network element from the at least one wireless communication unit, and to determine from the received transmit power information a likely class of the at least one further serving network element to which the transmit power information relates. If it is determined that the likely class of the at least one further serving network element to which the transmit power information relates is appropriate for establishing a link therewith, the signal processing logic module is arranged to initiate the establishment of a neighbour cell link with the at least one further serving network element.

摘要： A method and apparatus for redirecting a wireless communication unit (113) from a LTE cell to a neighbouring 3G or 2G cell for the purposes of performing a procedure which is available in the 2G or 3G cell but not available in the LTE cell includes the provision of an additional LTE access point (109) within the coverage area of an LTE macrocell. The additional LTE access point (109) is arranged to capture a wireless communication unit (113) which is camped onto the LTE macrocell and redirect it to a 3G/2G cell irrespective of whether or not a better service may be provided in the 2G/3G cell.. The invention has application to presence detection where collection of wireless communication units' and subscribers' IDs for such a purpose is possible in 3G and 2G cells but not in LTE cells.

摘要： A method for location validation of a UE in a cellular communications system uses measurements on a very low power "presence cell" in order to determine whether a UE is close to the presence cell rather than trying to provide this validation of proximity to the presence cell by accessing service through the presence cell. When the owner of the UE is performing a transaction (for example, a cash withdrawal at a cash machine) for which it is required to verify that their UE is in the immediate vicinity of where that transaction is taking place, a location validation centre may request that the UE takes specific measurements of the signal strength of a cell identified by a particular cell identifier which has been assigned to the presence cell. If the UE can detect the specified presence cell can report this to the location validation centre thereby confirming its location.
